MARY SMITH Obituary

MARY WINSTON SMITH
Was born August 11, 1926 in Washington, DC to Michael Edward and Mary Bernadette Winston. Heaven gained a leprechaun when Mary was called home on November 28, 2012. She is now reunited in eternal life with her beloved husband, Jacko; son, Mike and her grandson, Christopher, along with other family, friends and dogs; having a party in Heaven. Mary's favorite role was that of mother. Her joy, love and spirit will live on in her daughters, Mary Ellen Groff, Terry Gascoigne and Maureen "Mo" Smith; sons, Kevin Smith and Greg Smith; and the joy of her life, her sweet dog Sampson. Mary was known to her grandchildren Sara, Mark, Molly, Guillaume, Philippe and Adrien as "Nina" and "Momoo" and loved her great-grandchildren Jacob Jackson "J.J." and Samantha. A Memorial Mass and Celebration of her Life will be held at the Riderwood Chapel, 3110 Gracefield Rd., Silver Spring, MD. 20904 on Saturday, December 1 at 1:30 p.m. An Irish party will follow. The family asks all in attendance to wear green, Mary's favorite color. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, 901 E Street NW, Suite 405, Washington, DC 20004 or online at www.ovariancancer.org in memory of Mary W. How fortunate for all of you family members to have had Mary with you. Although I did not know her, clearly, from your testimony, Mary was a beautiful person. Perhaps I too will some day enjoy her company.

I regrettably will not be able to attend the Memorial Service. As a close friend and cowrker of the Smith Boys it would have been a good time to reconnect with old friends. My deepest condolences to the family.

The day that Mary married my cousin Jack was one of the happiest times of my life because she was one of my dearest friends. I have enjoyed many happy times with her wonderful family. God blesses us with the fact that this kind of joy lives in our hearts forever and becomes part of the beautiful fabric of our lives.
My love to all of Mary's family.

May all the good times you all shared together help ease the pain, and help you endure in the days to come.

Mary was like a mother to me and I will NEVER forget her for the chances she gave me to grow professionally when she opened her travel agency in Gaithersburg in the early '70's. She gave me inspiration to believe in myself and know that I had the capability to start a woman-owned business. Every St. Patrick's Day I thought fondly about her, knowing that she was making the most of it wherever she was. I will be there on Saturday to celebrate her life and gifts to all of us.

I wish I could join you at the service and Irish party. How appropriate for someone like Mary. She loved St. Patrick's Day. Yes, her spirit will live on.
