JOAN WELCH MURPHY (Age 81)  
On Tuesday, July 4, 2017 of Rockville, MD. Beloved wife of the late Walter J. Murphy, Jr.; mother of Kevin (Mary), Christopher (Elspeth), Brendan (Gail) and Colin (Traci) Murphy; grandmother of Delia, Owen, Patrick, Ian, Keira, Mallory, Brian, and Finn; sister of Rosemary Fuller. Relatives and friends may call at Holy Cross Church, 4900 Strathmore Avenue, Garrett Park, MD on Thursday, July 13 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment private. Memorial contributions may be made to Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School. Born in Washington, DC, Joan graduated from Blessed Sacrament Elementary School in Chevy Chase, DC and from Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School. She received her BA degree from Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY. In 1958, she married Walter and they began married life in Bethesda, MD and then moved to Rockville, MD, raising their four sons. Joan was an active member of Holy Cross parish and The Christ Child Society. She held a variety of jobs in medical offices and at the Georgetown Preparatory School library. She enjoyed golf and travel, and had many life-long friends. Joan loved to spend time with family and hosted many happy gatherings.
