Remembering you a lot this 2014 Memorial Day weekend, John.

Sir,
I will never forget the day I checked in with the S-3 shop of 1/4 following my bike wreck. You always had motivating things to say and always seemed to find the best in a Marine and encouraging them to be and do their best. Working with you was a pleasure and a great learning experience. I will also never forget the day that I took some time off of work at the Palm Springs Air Port and tour the air museum they have. I walked up and saw your memorial plane sitting there and was awestruck, then I saw your name, once again awestruck. My heart sank and I was in shock for a while afterwards. I will always remember you and you still inspire me to this day.

Hey John, Family, and his enormous circle of friends, just wanted you to know, though I'm sure you do, that not only on this day do I think of you, but on so many days. It used to give me pause to reflect why, but not anymore, just why in so many different circumstances, good, bad, happy sad, not just in the last 8 plus years but also in the 30 plus years since you left the prep and our paths took their course, that I think of you and the subtle, valuable, lessons you taught the unteachable (me) just by your example; never with boisterous words, just by un-waivering example of you doing the right thing no matter how easy it would've been to not. In fact, I can't ever recall you raising your voice or losing your cool even in the most crazy of circumstances. You were an everyday hero in how you always did the right thing, practiced the right way, always did your best, always put in the time when nobody was watching - and encouraged, but never pushed others (especially me) to just try doing a little extra. So, my fellow new jersey commuter to the Prep, teammate and friend, I take great pride in relating stories of you and what a hero you are. I still can completely feel how my spirit was shaken and what disbelief I had when I first heard. Then, somehow I thought of Frost's "Natures First Green is Gold" and I took comfort in knowing that you will, truly, always be Gold. Thank you for everything you probably never even knew.

John,

I miss ya brother... I remember us two guys taking chandler and melanea to the zoo together when they where about a year old. What a mess!!! Now Melanea is going into the airforce next month. I look at her and I think of you. You were a great dad and how unfair it is that I have gotten to see my daughter grow up. You were by far the best person I have met in my life. I will never forget you and yes... "it's Dukes tour" :) I really do love you dukes and I'll see ya soon!

Just sitting here reflecting on my Marine Corps days and the squadrons I served in. When I think of the Black Knights I immediately think about Major Spahr (Dukes). He was the best AAMO I ever worked with because he was a great listener. Although, listening is a great quality, I would say his best quality was his humor. He was very very funny. I loved the way he used to taunt the CW02. I could watch that Laurel and Hardy act all day. Dukes you are missed.
