JOHN DeVIERNO Obituary


JOHN DeVIERNO (Age 93)
Of Kensington, MD, passed away peacefully at home on November 17, 2016. He is survived by Ida, his wife of 69 years; son John A. (Nancy); daughter Alice (Nelson); son Paul (Arfah); and grandchildren Christopher, Andrew, Ida and Benjamin. He was predeceased in 2004 by son Richard for whom he was proud to walk granddaughter Angela down the aisle in June.Born in New York City, as a teenager he enjoyed Yankee baseball and excelled at academics, graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School. In 1936, he and his late brother Vincent were thrilled to attend Joe DiMaggio's Major League debut. During WWII, he served in Europe for the U.S. Army and thanks to the G.I. Bill of Rights, attended evening classes at NYU, graduating with honors in 1954 and moving to Maryland in 1958 with his family. First with the Navy Department, he was in Federal Government service for 40 years, retiring after holding a series of administrative and executive positions with N.I.H. and the Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 10401 Armory Avenue, Kensington, MD on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 3 p.m.www.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.com

A. former boss, a long time dear friend and a man I much admired , I feel blessed to have known him. I will miss our conversations, listening to his many stories and laughing from his great sense oh humor. Much sympathy to Ida and his family. He will be missed.
