Mary Ann was a generous, kind, and enduring presence in the Office of the Legal Adviser. She never hesitated to help anyone in need, and made our collective contributions to the United States better than they otherwise would have been. We miss her very much and extend deepest condolences to her family.

My prayers go out to Mary Ann's family. She truly was a special person. Even after I retired we would e-mail often to say "Hello". Glad to have been a friend at the State Department, Legal Office.

The following U.S. Department of State notice was issued today, Monday, June 16:
Passing of Mary Ann Birdas
It is with the most profound sadness that the Office of the Legal Adviser reports the passing of Mary Ann Birdas, on the morning of June 9. Mary Ann served in the Department for over sixty-three years, beginning her career in the Department in 1951 after two and one half years at the U.S. Civil Service Commission, and served as secretary in the Office of United Nations Affairs since 1966. She was an invaluable member of the office, with friends not just in L, but the Bureau of International Organizations, USUN, and elsewhere in the Department around the Executive branch. She showed a devotion and commitment to her work and to the success of the Department in achieving its objectives, and a deep kindness to all those around her, that is not often seen in this day and age. She was the winner of numerous awards for her countless contributions to the Department and received repeated recognition for her outstanding performance, and for generations of her many friends in L was a very special link to the history and traditions of both the Legal Adviser's Office and to the Department who can never be replaced.
Mary Ann is survived by her sisters, Christina and Bessie as well as her brother, John. Visitation will be on Monday, June 16, at the Collins Funeral Home in Silver Spring, MD from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, at 10:30 a.m, at St. Sofia Greek Orthodox Church in Washington, DC. Expressions of sympathy may be mailed to 5009 Elsmere Place, Bethesda, MD 20814-2825

Mary Ann was indeed a gentle soul, but she also was able to convince the State Department attorneys who I suspected of avoiding my calls to return my calls -- all without fuss. She was a steadying presence, and who could have suspected she had been so long in Federal Service? My condolences go to her family. Best wishes, Carole Jackson, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor

If anyone could truthfully be said to have been a legend in her own time, it was Mary Ann. Sher was always there for me during my years as Assistant Legal Adviser for UN Affairs, and her quiet cheerfulness, and patiennce to put up with anything (including me), were godsends. I have long missed her, and now will miss her even more . . . May God grant her eternal repose.

Mary Ann was a true friend and co-worker to me. She and I worked side by side from each other. We were each other's back up in the office of L/UNA and L/HRR here at the Department of State. I can truly say there will never be another Mary Ann Birdas. She was one in a million and she will always hold a special place in my heart. She's gone but will never be forgotten. Christina, John and Bessie, my deepest condolences to you and your family. May the peace of God rest upon you now and forever.
