FOR MATTIE: WHAT A SHINING STAR YOU WERE
You were so smart, so wise for a little guy
You stood tall and had such great ideas
You truly touched every one who had the
pleasure of meeting you either in person
or through your books and interviews
God had great plans for you and you couldn't
wait to get started
You were so gifted, so blessed
but yet you didn't let MD get in your way
You accepted each challenge as a learning
experience, a test and you passed with flying colors
You touched the world with such wisdom
Mattie, there will never be another like you
You were like a shooting star, they come every so
often, they are unique and special
just like you!
God truly made his best Angel when you came along
You were a shooting star .... you only could
stay a short amount of time because your
beloved siblings needed you so
You had such a simple way of life
Peace
Why can't it be? Maybe they will listen now
They will hear your mission statement over
and over because my friend, you made a difference
Your 14th birthday present is to watch from Heaven
your plan starting to come into action
Your pain and suffering is now over
You are one and in perfect health
Muscular Dystrophy is now a thing of the past
Be happy and get caught up with your brothers and sister
and please don't be concerned about your Mom, for she
Will be all right and your dog too...
You have touched so many hearts in your short time
here on earth
Everyone loved you so
you were an inspiration and a friend to so many
God allowed you to be his vessel to let the children
know they can have dreams and to follow them
you have made a difference in my life
You have shown such strength
determination and courage
You had a fighting spirit
a love of life
Yes Mattie you were this and so much more
Rest in Peace...the Peace you so wanted
to accomplish on this earth
You will have your beloved fireworks
because July 4th is right around the corner
Maybe finally, Freedom and Peace will
mean more all because of you
I will remember you always for when the sky is dark
at night, I will look up to the stars and the brightest
shiniest one will be you and I know you will be looking down on those
Who loved you so and your brightness will be your way of
Letting everyone know you are doing just fine!

Dear Miss Jenni,
As Mattie always said "Always play after every storm". Now comes the time for me to say "Mattie as you have said listen to your Heartsong. Mine has been singing a different song for quite some time. With you in mind I wish to say I miss you all the time. With you now in heaven I will never have to say to the self inside of me when will my song start to sing or how long can I listen. Now that you can watch me from the sky high up above never more will I have to wonder can I call or when will our heartsong join together to sing a joyous chorus. Never more will you and Jamie have to be two seperated brothers. Together the Stepanek family will only need a mother. Mattie only remember me as our Heartsongs sing together. I will never forget you or the many words you spoke. I love you always Mattie From Amanda L. Crisman"
Love you Miss Jenni and always remember even though this might be a gigantic thunder and lighining storm just remember to play after this storm.

We first met Mattie and Jeni at the FireFighters Softball Tournament for MDA. He was giving out little pieces of wisdom on tiny pieces of paper, doing what he could to help fight against MD. With Jeni by his side working so hard all weekend in the heat. Mattie has that special determination. There are very few people that you meet that give off that glow, that you know right away that you are in the presence of someone very special. Mattie and Jeni thank you so much, we felt your heartsong.

Mattie, Thanks for sharing your joys of life, love and peace with all of us around the world. You looked so peaceful last Sunday in church and I know God has a special place for you in heaven with your brothers and sister. Jeni, Thanks for sharing Mattie with us for the brief time he was on this planet. We missed your singing at Most Holy Rosary and Mattie's teaching in religion class. Blessings on all.
I feel a great sadness, as I lost my best friend, Phyllis Mitchell, in 1961 when we were both in 6th grade and to this day I have never forgotten the strength of her and her Aunt that took care of her and when I first saw Mattie it brought memories of Phyllis back.
Now Mattie is in heaven-running with Phyllis and doing the things they could not do here on earth.
Also keeping an eye and I hope providing some guidance to those left behind.
Blessings on your family Mattie, you will never be forgotten

GOD BLESS MATTHEW....WALK WITH THE ANGELS....GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS..
My Dearest Family
Some things I'd like to say; but first of all, to let you know that I arrived okay. I'm writing this from Heaven, where I dwell with God above; where there's no more tears or sadness, there is just eternal love. Please do not be unhappy, just because I am out of sight. Remember that I am with you every morning, noon, and night. That day I had to leave you, when my life on earth was through, God picked me up and hugged me, and He said, "I welcome you." "It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on. I need you here so badly, as part of My Big Plan; there's so much that we have to do to help our mortal man." Then God gave me a list of things He wished for me to do. And, foremost on that list of mine is to watch and care for you. And I will be beside you every day and week and year, and, when you're sad, I'm standing there to wipe away the tear. And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight, God and I are closest to you in the middle of the night. When you think of my life oN earth, and those 13 loving years, because you're only human, they are bound to bring you tears. But do not be afraid to cry-it does relieve the pain. Remember, there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain. I wish that I could tell you of all that God has planned; But, if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand. But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over, I am closer to you now than I ever was before. And to my very many friends, trust God knows what is best. I'm still not far away from you-I'm just beyond the crest. There are rocky roads ahead of you, and many hills to climb. But, together we can do it, taking one day at a time. It was always my philosophy, and I'd like it for you too, that as you give unto the world, so the world will give to you. If you can help somebody who is in sorrow or in pain, then you can say to God at night, "My day was not in vain." And now I am contented that my life, it was worthwhile; knowing, as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile. So, if you meet somebody, who is down and feeling low, just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go. When you are walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind, I'm walking in your footsteps, only half a step behind. And when you feel the gentle breeze, or the wind upon your face, that's me giving you a great big hug, or just a soft embrace. And when it's time for you to go, from that body to be free, remember you're not going, you are coming here to me. And I will always love you from that land way up above. Will be in touch again soon. P.S., God sends his love.

I will truly miss Mattie. Such an amazing visionary. This past November I got to meet Mattie at a book signing at Borders Books in White Flint Mall for Mattie's fifth. It was awinspiring listen to Mattie read various poems from all five of his book. After meeting Mattie I shared Matties story and his poems with my pen pals aboard. My pen pal from Russia was so touch by Matties poem that she asked me to send her one of his books.
The one thing I will miss about Mattie is his beautiful smile and not hearing call in the radio and read a poem. I'm so happy I got to meet Mattie and I will treasure the books and cd that I purchased the day I met him.

Dear Jeni,
I feel like I knew Mattie like he was part of my family. I followed him on the Oprah show and on the internet. As a Christian, grieving for a loved one is never easy but may you find peace and comfort in knowing that Mattie is in Heaven. If I lived closer, I would attend Mattie's viewing. Instead, I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I will treasure his poetry and CD forever. Thank you for sharing your son with the world. As a mother I know that there is no greater gift from God. Love, Brandi

Jeni:
I was depply saddened to hear of the loss of the passing of Mattie who was an inspiration to me. I will always remember Mattie with fondness. God bless his soul. He was a remarkable and arguably a most loved young man of those who came in contact with him. No one can match his wit, charm and humor. And I am happy with the thoughts that he is now with our Dear Lord in Heaven.
Having recently lost three members of my family during the past three years, I can empathize with what you and your family are experiencing at this time. Losing loved ones is one of the most difficult time of our lives and I have never really learned what to say to comfort those who survive. Even though my sister, brother, and sister-in-law are gone, they will always remain in my heart as I know Mattie will remain in yours. You are a strong woman and your love and devotion to each other was God's gift of His love to the both of you. The journey continues and you will never be alone. Look for the faith and strength that God originally gave both of you and remember that eternal love never dies--it just live forever and ever. May God bless you now and always, and may God raise Mattie up on eagle wings in Heaven. Thank you God for sharing your precious Mattie with us for a short time as he fought the good fight and shows us what courage is all about durng his illness.

You didn't have to know Mattie to "know him". Every year we looked forward to watching the Jerry Lewis MS Telethon, to see Mattie's smiling face and hear his words of wisdom. Im 48 years old and currently dealing with a rare immume system disease. But when I think of how brave and couragous you accepted your disease and lived a much more meaningful life for it, I do not complain, but only hope I can be half as strong as you. I hope your mom and family take comfort in knowing you no longer suffer, but now with God in Heaven. While your life was way too short, your impact is not. Thanks for making life just a little more special.

This world is a litter dimmer with the extinguishing of Mattie's earthly light. However, this world is a far better place for him having been in it but for a brief 13+ years. His life was an inspiration, his poetry an ongoing gift of beauty. He will be missed! He will be remembered at Mass and in other prayers. God bless Mattie and his Mother!

Jen, Micah & family ... your heartache is shared by so many. Discovering Mattie a few years ago has been a Godsend. And, truly God sent him to you, and you graciously shared him with us ... My dog, Hootie! and I volunteer in pediatric therapy. Mattie's inspiration has helped us counsel and visit with thousands of young people in Atlanta. Mattie's profound perspective and truly loving heart will live on...I'll continue to share his wisdom/soul...with children and adults whose senses will be soothed by his heart. He's blessed mine. May his incredible love and heart continue to soothe you.
Love and gratitude,
Sherilyn & Hootie

Jeni,
Mattie's books sit beside my son Taylor's bed and are often read by us before he goes to sleep. We had the honor to meet both of you at a local Border's where Mattie signed my son's "Journey Through Heartsongs" copy. It was late and Mattie was tired, but when the booksigning co-ordinator told the line of people that he would have to stop signing books Mattie piped up" I'm alright"
That night my son gave Mattie a heart shaped rock and a sketch he did of God's hand reaching through the clouds to help us. I hope in some small way they brought Mattie joy, and that you will find comfort in the knowledge that Mattie's dedication to life as a peacemaker
will continue to give those blessed by his life; hope and meaning.
We were lucky that you shared Mattie with the world, and Mattie was blessed to have you as his mother. You are ,and will continue to be in our prayers.

Jeni:
this is your "waiting room" bench neighbor, Kendal's mom. I was so moved of learning about Mattie; he was such a burst of energy/laughter in all situations. I always admired your focus, strength and determination. You were an inspiration regarding the care of my own daughter. Truly you, Mattie and those who have gone home before you have treasures upon treasures waiting for you in heaven. Celebrate Mattie's life - he did.

I came to see you at one of your appearances, and watched as you readied your table for your poetry reading. I was in awe of you; how "typical" you were of a kid your age. Right before you began to read, chills came over me. I felt I was in the presence of someone of true greatness, put here on Earth by God to brighten the lives of others. And, in your short but influential life, you proved that to be true. Thank you, Mattie, for gracing our lives with your gifts.

Dearest Jeni -- Ed and I have been keeping you and Mattie in our prayers for years now...
We will STILL be praying for you now, as you adjust your life around Mattie's physical absence...knowing you will hold him in your heart and mind, until you can hold him in your own arms once again.
The Lord's Peace be with you.
Always love from Ed and Cathy Johnson

Dear Stepanek Family,
My daughter, Katie Veon, was in the same hapkido class with Mattie at Grand Master Lee's studio in Clinton, MD. I will always remember Mattie's enthusiasm and courage as he earned his black belt. I have not had a chance to read all of Mattie's poems, but I have seen a few of them. They were very beautiful and filled with wisdom born of suffering. It broke my heart to hear of Mattie's leaving us, but I know for certain that he is in the presence of Our Lord, praying for us all. In Heaven, he can finally be the peacemaker he always dreamt he'd be. I will keep him and you all in my prayers.

A POEM WRITTEN FOR MATTIE
Posted by JAN on June 24, 2004, 7:05 am
FOR MATTIE: WHAT A SHINING STAR YOU WERE
You were so smart, so wise for a little guy
You stood tall and had such great ideas
You truly touched every one who had the
pleasure of meeting you either in person
or through your books and interviews
God had great plans for you and you couldn't
wait to get started
You were so gifted, so blessed
but yet you didn't let MD get in your way
You accepted each challenge as a learning
experience, a test and you passed with flying colors
You touched the world with such wisdom
Mattie, there will never be another like you
You were like a shooting star, they come every so
often, they are unique and special
just like you!
God truly made his best Angel when you came along
You were a shooting star .... you only could
stay a short amount of time because your
beloved siblings needed you so
You had such a simple way of life
Peace
Why can't it be? Maybe they will listen now
They will hear your mission statement over
and over because my friend, you made a difference
Your 14th birthday present is to watch from Heaven
your plan starting to come into action
Your pain and suffering is now over
You are one and in perfect health
Muscular Dystrophy is now a thing of the past
Be happy and get caught up with your brothers and sister
and please don't be concerned about your Mom, for she
Will be all right and your dog too...
You have touched so many hearts in your short time
here on earth
Everyone loved you so
you were an inspiration and a friend to so many
God allowed you to be his vessel to let the children
know they can have dreams and to follow them
you have made a difference in my life
You have shown such strength
determination and courage
You had a fighting spirit
a love of life
Yes Mattie you were this and so much more
Rest in Peace...the Peace you so wanted
to accomplish on this earth
You will have your beloved fireworks
because July 4th is right around the corner
Maybe finally, Freedom and Peace will
mean more all because of you
I will remember you always for when the sky is dark
at night, I will look up to the stars and the brightest
shiniest one will be you and I know you will be looking down on those
Who loved you so and your brightness will be your way of
Letting everyone know you are doing just fine!

I just wanted to let you know what an inspiration Mattie was to me and especially my son. My son was a quadraplegic due to an assault. We first saw Mattie on Oprah. Brandon was so moved by Mattie, that he had a whole different outlook. He passed away on March 11th 2004. Hopefully they will spend some time together and keep singing their heartsongs. Mattie was a gift to the world. My deepest sympathy.
God bless

Mattie was such an inspiration to me. I am 56 years old and never had the opportunity to to meet Mattie, however, felt like I knew him well. Mattie is now in heaven with God.

Hello Jenny,
Our hearts go out to you each day
at the death of Mattie. I heard so much about Mattie at the homicide of our son in 2002.
The Stephanie Roper Foundation helped us so much during our loss.
We love you. Vera

Mattie's life and works are an inspiration to the world. I often read his poems to my second and third grade kids in religious education at St. Michaels. He taught us a lot in his short life. It is important to keep his memory alive.

Mattie is now one of God's Angels. He joins his brothers and his sister in a place better than this; but, this place is better for having had Mattie for a very short 13 years. God Bless you Mattie and Jeni. Keep writing your heartsongs, we know of ours now, thanks to you.

Your soul touched many more lives than you could of ever imagined.
Millions of people around the world had you in their daily prayers, me included.
You will be forever missed, even though we have never meant, your "Heartsongs", touched me, and my family.
My heart aches for Jeni, as a mother who has lost so much, but your son, was and will always be remembered as he wanted to be, as a "Peacemaker".
May God Bless You!!
