As hot summer days descend upon like a hot blanket, this was the time Maureen loved to go to the water to cool off. We made trips to Bay and River many times, as well used the Bethesda pool more than often while we shared our apartment on Bradley Blvd. Maureen always had a plan to get out of town for a drive with friends and see the sights. I think of her so often and feel inspired by her to this day to get off the couch and drive or bike!

In sixth grade, Maureen convinced me to try out for the soccer team at Holy Redeemer. The coach could not see any talent in me. Maureen said I needed to practice! And try out again. So she met me on the field and I tried to kick the ball to get goals. No such luck. Maureen decided to try to teach me to play defense. She dribbled the ball towards me and yelled at me to "charge" her and steal the ball away. After about ten tries, I stole the ball! MAJOR accomplishment. Huge amount of confidence for the first time in my life athletically. I made the team. Played all season as a halfback. Enjoyed the games, whether we lost or won. Loved being on a team with a true athlete like Maureen. We went on the play Junior and Varsity soccer at Immaculata and without her encouragement, I'd be a lump on the sidelines. I'd suggest to all in honor of Maureen, encourage somebody, ANYBODY to try something new that they don't think they can do. And then someday they'll return the favor in kind to another person who needs a push. Loved that girl. Love her to this day.

One of the reasons I knew that moving into a teensy apartment in Bethesda with Maureen after college was that she'd already proven herself independent and thrifty: two things I had not yet mastered. And she was just the nicest person!! Life with Maureen was never difficult, always full of laughs and long talks and walks, and richly spiritual. We shopped for food together, shared dinners, tried diets (and then quit the diets with bags of potato chips and dips!), watched the news each night and debated what was happening in politics, world affairs and arts. We were on opposites of the political spectrum but Maureen and I never had an ugly disagreement. She was too diplomatic and we accepted each other's differences. We both adored our fathers and often bragged about them having such a strong influence on our lives. Also living with Maureen allowed me to be ME. Maureen never held a grudge, judged me, or put me down. She was simply above those levels. I will never think back on those days at "The Drake" building without a smile on my face and gratitude for all Maureen taught me. I miss her laugh, her enormous smile, her merry eyes and rapier-like wit and moxy. I am grateful that Monica now possesses her mother's beauty inside and out!
