PAUL O'BRIEN Obituary

PAUL L. O'BRIEN, JR.
On Friday, July 31, 2015 Paul died, peacefully and with his family at his side, after a valiant struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He was 50 years young. Born and raised in Chevy Chase, Maryland, he continued to make that his home with his family until the time of this death. Paul, also known affectionately to his friends as PL or Pablo, graduated from Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ in 1983, East Carolina University in 1988, and received a Master's Degree from Arizona State University in 1990. At the time of his death, Paul was Director of Marketing and Sales at PwC. Paul was quick with a joke and even quicker with a smile. He was also a homebody. Few things made him happier than to hear his house filled with the laughter and chatter of family and friends. To him, the more the merrier. He relished being in the company of dear friends, especially sitting with them after a round of golf at Columbia Country Club enjoying an adult beverage, or two. He walked on the right side of the political spectrum but his undying loyalty to his friends allowed him to absolve those who had strayed to the left. While working at KPMG, he laid eyes on the beautiful Julie Frank and shortly after they married in 1997. While Paul always loved looking at the ladies, no one would ever come close to the bar Julie set. She was his true north, his rock, his love. Paul and Julie had four astonishing girls - Kayla (16), Sara (15), Ellie (13) and Anna (10). They have excelled in school, in sports, and in spirit. He was a proud father and the girls are his legacy that will carry forth his spirit. It is the unwavering love of his wife and children that carried him through and bolstered his soul during the last few difficult years of his life. In addition to countless friends, Paul leaves behind his brother Doug, wife Sharon and nephews Carter, Sean and Colin; his sister Cindy and brother Stephen. He was preceded in death by his mother and father Patricia and Paul O'Brien. While those of us who had the good fortune to have him in our lives grieve his loss, PL, looking down today, at the 50 years given on earth, would smile broadly and say, "It's all good." Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20815 on Wednesday, August 5 at 11 a.m. Interment Gates of Heaven Cemetery. It was Paul's wish that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to: The O'Brien Girls Education Fund, c/o Wiley Rein LLP, Attn.: Scott McCaleb, 1776 K Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20006.

Paul's and Julie's impact could be measured by the 600+ who were at Blessed Sacrament...may we all strive to live a life that affects so many in such a way. Rest in peace, Paul...you will be missed. Your wife and daughters grieve yet I hope rejoice in the power of what you taught them and us.

When I think of Paul the picture in my head (Blair 1983) is of a lanky, handsome, preppy, kind, and incredibly funny boy who was quickly making his way to the golf course to sneak in a few holes before dinner with a huge smile on his face. Such a nice guy. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, wife and daughters. God Bless.

Julie and family, my deepest condolences for your loss. Paul and I went to Blair together, played a lot of golf, and shared some wonderful times spending summers and vacations on HHI. He was a genuine friend and I'm sure a wonderful husband/father..may you always remember the best and know he's going to always be a part of all of our lives...

I attended Blair with Paul. He was a great guy and, most importantly, was obviously a loving husband and father. May God hold him close and give your family some comfort during this incredibly difficult time. Sending prayers your way.

We shared the same birthday and built a friendship as carefree kids loving the beach and water of Hilton Head. So many memories have both saddened me and warmed my heart this weekend as PL was so full of life. I am so sorry for Julie and the girls and I pray for their peace and comfort. God bless Paul as he rests now and his family as they grieve.

To my college roommate and friend, words cannot express my sadness to your family. Though we haven't been in touch recently, reading about your commitment to your amazing family made me smile and remember my dear friend. Fondly, Peej
