Robert will live forever in our hearts.

I will always remember the name Robert Joseph Hess ever since I did the color guard for the memorial service at Robinson High School. I did not know Robert personally but he is a role model for all of us.

I just recently learned of the death of your son, Robert, in Afghanistan. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I went to ODU for two years (80-82) and remember how passionate and serious you were about flying. You must be so proud of the fine young man he became.

Bob:
I know you won't remember my name, but I was in the ODU ROTC unit with you in '79-81. I only recently read the ODU Monarch magazine and discovered the memorium to your son. I wanted to let you know how sorry I am for such a devastating loss. You must be so proud to have raised such a wonderful son willing to serve his country to the full measure--just as you were. No words can ease your pain, but I offer heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

I didn't know RJ well, but I was a member of the Cavalier Battallion at the same time he was and a co-captain of Lake Braddock High's swim team at the same time he was captain of our rivals at Robinson.
I cannot tell you how sorry I am for your loss, I am proud to have known RJ even a little. He was a great man and a great American. We will never forget his courage.
