SANDRA MARGARET SMETHURST (Age 47)
On Tuesday, March 18, 2014, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved wife of Mark Smethurst; mother of Laura and Ellie; daughter of Dorothy Gilligan and the late Norman Gilligan; sister of Alan Jones and Pamela Laidlaw. Also survived by other loving family and friends. Memorial Service will be offered at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to www.thrombosis-charity.org-uk (Life Blood the Thrombosis Charity based in the U.K.) or to www.stjude.org (In the U.S. to reflect her devotion to children). www.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.com

It was such a shock to hear about Sandra's passing. I have such great memories of when your family lived in Wisconsin... they gatherings at your house, our kids being good friends, the pretzel cookies she taught me to make, your living room full of poinsettias for an NBSC fundraiser and the hours spent at the pool, she made it all fun. Mark, Laura and Ellie,
We are profoundly saddened to hear the tragic news of Sandra's passing. Although I didn't know her that well, I know she was the rock in your family. She had such a warm, loving and gentle way about her and a gleam in her voice when it came to discussions of all of you, she was so proud! I do feel very blessed to have had to opportunity to have known her.

We were devastated to hear of Sandra's passing. She was such a warm and lovely person with a fabulous outlook on life. Her enthusiasm, humor and vocal support of Greta last year during Greta's first year playing fastpitch softball was so instrumental in giving Greta the confidence to continue.
