In 2024, Thomas Mastroianni was posthumously awarded the Medal of the American Liszt Society by ALS President, Jay Hershberger.
Jay sent a warm letter to the family:
"there were many expressions of love, respect, and admiration for your dad's life, work, and deep humanity. He remains a pillar of the Lisztian pantheon!"

Tom, you are gone from here, but you are never forgotten. You taught me to think, not just about piano playing. That gift never goes away.

Toms expertise in the kitchen was near legendary. We were roommates for quite some time. I learned a lot about cooking from him. Thanks, Tom! R.I.P. Ill see you later.

Dear Mrs. Mastroianni & family,
I only recently heard this news and it is with
great sadness and disbelief. Dr. M was simply an incredible person who was willing to teach you all he knew and support you completly in any way he could accepting and understanding we are all in different places in our lives with most of us doing the best we can. I have tried calling unsuccessfully to wish you the best, however do know I think of you often Mrs. Mastrioanni remembering our brief chat while sitting together at Dr. M's performance at CUA during the Beethoven celebration, in Ward Hall, and especially when I sit down at the piano being a former student,
or find myself at CUA. Take care of yourself and each other as we never know how short our time together can truly be.
Peace be with you all.

I too just found this out after visiting the ALS website. I always enjoyed his company and kind words. When we did meet; discussing social justice issues and the works of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul were always refreshing. A great man and musician who will be truly missed here.

Word of Dr. Mastroianni's passing has only just now reached me, and I am so deeply saddened and moved to tears. I had the fantastic privilege of studying piano with him while I was still in high school in Lubbock, Texas, and continuing when I was his student at Texas Tech. I remember your gracious hospitality many times in your home, Mary Ann, and my heartfelt prayers are with you and all the family. I will always treasure his teaching in every area of life as well as music. I am sure the angels have indeed led him into Paradise.

Dr. Mastroianni was a wonderful teacher. Lessons with him were a blend of technique, interpretation, and music history, all delivered in a fabulously artful, authoritative, and diplomatic manner. My condolences to his family.

Dear Mary,
My family will be praying for your father and your family. The memorial mass for your father together with the other deceased members of the CUA community will be celebrated on Monday, Oct. 6th. I will be attending that mass. We have not seen each other since IFPRI. I am now with CUA. Please be comforted to know that your Dad is now with the Lord.
Sincerely,
Luz

Tom was my student for a number of years at Casa Italiana in Washington, DC. He took at least 5 classes with me, including two that he directly inspired: a class on the novel Il Gattopardo, set in Sicily, and a class on the history and culture of Italian cuisine, which culminated in a feast held at his home - truly wonderful ! He was a wonderful student in class, always well-prepared for his presentations, very insightful in his comments during class discussions, very happy to share his Sicilian background and everything else Italian about his life - I loved having him in class, as did all of the other students ! This is a great loss and he will be deeply missed.

To the family of Tom Mastroianni,
I was one of his fellow students at Casa Italiana for many classes. He was always such a humble and gentle person, and a really interesting student. His talents added elegance to many of our courses, whether it was his musical genius for our opera class or his passion for cooking in our food of Italy study. And he loved to share his experiences in his Almalfi musical venture. He will be missed.

Dear Mary,
I know words are a small contribution or consolation at this time, but you surely must know how much Tom touched all the lives of those who knew him, myself included. I will always treasure my all-too-brief moments with him; for me, he was a model of sincerity, integrity, and compassion. All of us in ALS will miss him profoundly.
Sincerely,

Dear Mary,
I was so shocked to hear the news. Tom was a true mentor to me. I will always be so grateful for the time I spent with him doing research for my dissertation. Kind, loving and so gentle. It was an honor to graduate "on his watch." He will be missed by the world.
