On Thursday, December 18, 2014, of Beltsville, MD. Beloved husband of Kathryn Jeanne Cleary; father of Kirsten (Robert) Zuzin, Bridgid (Christopher) Houbeck, Shannon (Adam) Holt, and Maura (Stephen) Anthony; grandfather of Meg, Rhett, and Nadia; son of Patricia and the late Leo Cleary; brother of Lynne (Ronald) Bishop, Colleen (David) Douglas, John (Debra) Cleary, and Patricia (Buddy) Dukes. Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, 20901 (Valet Parking), Monday, December 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 11011 Montgomery Road, Beltsville, MD 20705 on Tuesday, December 23, at 11 a.m. Interment private. I was so glad to finally meet this fine man at Bridgid and Chris' wedding in August. I was blown away by his father-of-the-bride speech. In a few moments of conversation afterwards I came to feel as if I had known him for years. I am sorry not to get a chance to know him better, but pleased to have known him at all. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, especially the amazing Cleary girls and their dear mother.

Bill was a very special colleague to me - a mentor, a confidant, and a friend. He was very proud of his family and always took an interest in mine. He made me feel special and his keen wit always made me smile. There was only one Bill and he will be sorely missed in the halls of DOE.

Bill was well-loved by the folks at DOE. Bill was always supportive, generous and joyous. Bill was perenially joyous; he didn't have a bad day. His kindness was genuine, and affected every interaction. I valued his opinions because they invariably contained the substance of helpfulness. Bill was always open-hearted and kind. I think I will miss his genuine and unreserved kindness most of all. My sincerest condolences to Jeannie, and the Cleary daughters --of whom Bill was justly proud -- and the extended Cleary family.

Like everyone, I think, it was such a shock to learn of Bill's passing. I had just called him a couple days earlier and he sounded great.I worked with Bill for over 30 years. He always had excellent counsel and advice, which was often delivered with his grand sense of humor. He was immensely proud of his family, so my sincerest sympathy to all of them.

It is an impossible task to put a lifetime of kindness and love into a brief expression of condolence. There is only one Mr. Cleary and of course to me and my brothers and sisters, he will always be Mr. Cleary. You always felt at home with Mr. Cleary around - his kindness and generosity erased any awkwardness you might have had and you felt like you were part of the family instantly. Bill was a treasured colleague at the Department of Energy in the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Program. He was extraordinarily dedicated to his job and always ready with a warm, friendly smile. He was a favorite in our office. We will miss him a lot!

Bill was a longtime friend of my husband, Saunders Kramer and was exceptionally kind to our Saunders Jr in giving him an opportunity to work in ORI.
