I have a lot of good memories of Billy. In our younger years I could always count on him to be at “the corner” at 6:30 PM. It was the place in Watertown where the guys would hang out and socialize with the babes. We would often kill time by taking rides through Harvard Sq. Then there were the trips to Montreal, Lake George, Cape Cod,
and Time Sq N.Y. While in Times Sq I remember we purchased our first Identification Card (Certified Civilian Card). We placed our photo and typed in the info (d.o.b over 21) then laminated it. The funny thing ……… it actually worked at some package stores! In retirement years we spent time talking on the phone or e-mailing about the Patriots and Red Sox. I'm going to miss those conversations good friend………JC

I told Gina this in a phone call this morning. When someone close to us dies, we pause and do some life reflection just to make sure we ourselves are on the right path. I learned from Bill that you can be uncomplicated, true, caring and honest and touch many lives. We don't have to make some big statement. Just care deeply for the people around you and be honest in everything you do. The last few days of his life I kept saying, "you're ok Bill" and finally switched to putting my hand on his shoulder and saying, "you did good Bill." It was the only thing I could think of to say but seemed to fit the simplicity of his life. Bill was a good man who will always be remembered for his honesty and his care for others.

Today I drove off into the sunrise towards my new home in North Carolina. I thought of all the fish we were suppose to catch, the boat I would talk you into purchasing, the fun times we would have in the Carolinas. Later, as I got deep into my drive , I heard Paul Pierce was signed by the Wizards and I immediately wanted to tell you, but alas, I had already forgotten you had gone home to the big Watertown in the Sky. When I got home today, I had a problem with my air conditioner and again, I thought you would know what to do; however reality was a harsh reminder that you are gone. I love you very much and the void you have left in my heart is so very large. I always thought you were unbreakable, and I somehow cant believe you could die. I miss you Dad, I hope you realize how much you meant to me and I am so grateful for all that you did for me and sacrifices you made to get me where I am today. I am forever in your debt, your friend, your fan, your son, Brent

Sorry to hear about Bill. He was definitely a unique person. I played on the same NOAA softball team and did a number of fishing trips with him. He had a zest for life. Always fun to be around him.

So sad to hear of the passing of Bill. We had some good battles in the NOAA softball league many years ago. A tough competitor, but always time for a beer and a few laughs after the game. You will be missed! RIP Bill, God Bless!

Bill and Gina Stoney raised two amazing kids in Brent and Samantha. I've been close friends with Brent for over 20 years and he has always spoken fondly of his father. A good man and a heck of a fisherman that taught his son well...RIP Mr. Stoney.

Bill Stoney – A great man has been lost! Bill was manifestly skilled and successful in the treacherous, tricky world of Federal Government middle management. He was a world-class physical scientist and an intrepid investigator; a no-nonsense manager and an inspirational leader. Bill cared about his people -- an extremely rare trait in the modern American workplace! He was fair and sincere to both the hard worker and the slacker, the executive and the journeyman. It was an honor to work for Bill, and he taught me many valuable science and management lessons. My four years working for Bill were the most enjoyable of a 35-year career. And he was a great friend to many people outside the workplace, especially his family. Bill you will be sorely missed!

My family will each hold dear the many memories of Bill. He was our dear neighbor and a personal friend. Bill was also a fellow Vietnam Veteran who for many years we could only talk of those experiences between us. His cooking and meals with Gina, Brent and Samantha were legendary! RIP
Welcome home, veteran.

Bill was one of the first friends we had when I first moved to Maryland. Our families had such great times together for many years - camping in western MD, WV, and VA. I remember the timeshare gig we all did in Williamsburg. We raced to get out first and Mike and Barbara beat us. But Bill and Gina were last - Bill wanted to make the guy work for it before they said "No" and so he kept asking questions. The 3 families went to OBX a bunch of times, and then of course there was softball. What great memories, when all the NOAA families were growing up together. We somehow fell out of touch when Bill retired, but reconnected when we retired, and I'm so glad. Bill had a great smile, a great laugh, and a practical common sense attitude. I will miss him very much!

Bill Stoney was the best boss I had at NOAA. He was tough, yet fair, and could get down in the technical details without micro-managing. Bill was a good friend, a good teammate, and an all-around great guy. Bill really liked sports, especially hockey and NOAA league softball:
now he plays on God's team.
