To the Varney Family It was my honor to get to know Steve and take care of him as a patient. I always enjoyed our talks. I saw him the week before his death and he talked about his children and that there were no grandchildren in sight but he was hopeful. Always busy and involved. i will miss him

To Mike & to Steve's Family,

Many fond memories of our days as kids growing up & playing baseball at the Oak St diamonds and hanging out at your house on 5th St. It was also great catching up with you guys in Madison, Wausau, etc., over the years when the Tigers would make deep runs in the state football playoffs. Was still comical listening to Steve & Johnny Adler arguing over who was more responsible for some of the incomplete passes thrown in the '69 Columbus season opener vs Madison Edgewood at Beell Stadium. I think "Trooper" may have dropped a couple.

I know the NY Yankees have lost a life-long fan.

Condolences, Mike, Jerry, Donna & Family.

He was a terrific friend and an even better man. He will be missed by all of us who had the privledge of knowing him. God bless.

Donna and Family,
Words cannot express how deeply saddened I am by Steve's passing. He was a genuinely kind, wonderful and caring man. I remember the countless Tiger games he would attend when I was in high school to watch me pitch. It was a blessing to be able to share my wedding day with him and Donna as well, he wouldn't miss anything if it meant getting together with friends again. I can't count the numerous stories Steve and my Dad had together from playing football at Columbus to hitch hiking to CA together when they were 18. Steve will be truly missed and I hope God has given him the ability to do everything again that he once loved to do! I know Steve will be looking over everyone, because that is just the kind of man he is!

Thank you Steve for letting my son have the priveledge of playing on the Black Sox team. The kids loved to play ball as much as you loved coaching. There are many memories of traveling throughout the state and especially St. Louis to play in tournaments. The "Black Sox" were a great team and the kids have many trophies and medals to show for it. Steves love for baseball and coaching will be remembered by all the kids he coached. Thanks for all the great memories. Our thoughts go out to Donna and the family. Gone but not forgotten.
