Growing up in Hatley, I rember going to Hedtke's IGA as a little girl and then working there as a teenager (my first real job). It was fun talking to Wally and hearing about the history of Hatley and the store; imagining what it was like it was like when his parents opened the first store in the early 1900's and how eventually the kids took it over. It's sad how things change - how progress has led to the closing of the "mom & pop" shops. Hedtke's IGA was a Hatley icon that I never imagined would be gone. I moved away for almost 15 years and lost touch with everyone in Hatley. I was sad when I heard the store was closing, and even sadder to hear of his passing. I will always have happy memories of Wally & Fred, and working at the store for them (I can't believe that was almost 20 years ago!). Tilly, Jeff, Fred and the rest of the family - I am so sorry for your loss. He will be missed. You will be in my prayers. God Bless you and keep you and comfort you in this time of sorrow.
