Robert Scherer Obituary

Scherer, Robert

Robert R "Bob" Scherer, 83, of Weston, passed Sunday, December 23, 2012 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, Wausau, WI. He is reunited with his beloved wife, his folks and family and many dear friends that journeyed ahead to welcome him home.

Bob was born January 5, 1929, the oldest child to the late Bernard (Bernie) and Margaret (Leanna) Scherer in West Allis, Wisconsin. He often talked about working odd jobs as a young man and serving as altar boy at church. He joined the US Air Force at the time of the Korean War and had obtained the rank of Sergeant when he was honorably discharged in 1952. He and the former Joyce Vander Schaaf were married January 20, 1951. She preceded him in death on October 29, 2011.

Bob & Joyce were married on January 20, 1951 by the justice of the peace in Wausau. The church blessed their marriage in March 1951 at the Catholic Church in West Allis, WI.

The newlyweds moved to Wausau, WI where Bob worked for the DeGelleke Company of Milwaukee as a carpenter. They took up residence in the east side neighborhood of Park Avenue where they met many great friends, remaining friends to this day. During the early years they were involved in "Stunt Night" and the PTA with their children's grade school, Franklin School.

Many summer weekends were spent camping with friends at Bumbers campground on Muskellunge Lake near Tomahawk, WI. In 1971 the couple took over the Arrow Bar & Café in Weston. Bob will always be remembered for his fall corn roasts at the bar and that he would give anyone the shirt off his back. He would not say "no" to anyone who asked him to do a favor. In 1984 Bob & Joyce retired from the tavern business and together they became caretakers at Whiplash, a private estate near Hayward WI. He maintained the trails for golf carts in the summer and both cross country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter months. Many great super bowl weekends were had at "the penthouse" with lots of family and many friends. They were also able to travel to Washington, DC and take in the sights during that time. In 1995 they moved to their retirement home at R&R Bay view on the Big Chip. Bob and Joyce moved back to Weston in 2008 to be closer to family

He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Ellen (Vander Schaaf) Scherer, parents Bernard and Margaret Scherer, Joyce's siblings Gertrude (Raymond) Berndt, Harold (Betty) Vander Schaaf, Margaret (Almon) Manson, Maril (Richard) Koeck, brother in law Paul Dohr and nephew Nick Dohr.

Bob is survived his 5 children, Marie Scherer - Haszard and Allan Haszard, St. Augustine Beach, FL, Linda and Doug Stone, Merrill, WI and their children, Joshua (Jill) Stone and Corey Stone, Carol and Gary Schmidt, Mosinee,WI and their children, Eric (Cherie) Schmidt and Michael (Michelle) Schmidt, Bernard and Roni Scherer, Tomahawk, WI and their daughter Nicole (fiancé Cody Rice), Ben's first wife, Kerry Scherer and their children Matthew Scherer (fiancé Marilyn Hein) and Ryan Scherer, Jennifer and David Olsen, Weston, WI and their daughter, Samantha Olsen. Great-grandchildren Olivia, Harley and Jackie Stone, Ember, Sabrina and Ariana Schmidt, Jake, Starla and Logan Scherer. Bob is further survived by one brother Daniel (Donna) Scherer and sisters Pat Leroy, Leanne (Dave) Szymczak and Cathy Scherer and sister in law Gwendolyn Dohr and many special nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 12:00 Noon at St. Agnes Catholic Church Friday, December 28, 2012. Friends may call from 10 am until the time of service.

The family would like to send many thanks to the staff at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. Although the time was short, we much appreciate the loving care given to Bob and the support & kind words for our family. We also want to thank good friends Deb & Earl, and Jesse too.

Bob was a member of the Rothschild Post 492 American Legion and belonged to the Carpenter Union Local 460 of Wausau.

John J. Buettgen Funeral Home is serving the family.

Marie, Linda, Carol, Benny, Jennifer, and families.

My sincere sympathies for the passing of your Dad. I have many fond memories of your Mom and Dad and all of the families on Park Ave in Wausau. What a wonderful and simpler time to have grown up. Stunt Night, Franklin school, the penny candy from the little store on the corner, Buying cigarettes for our parents at Van's supermarket sledding and berry picking at "The Field" and so many more!

I was amazed your father knew I was a Huehnerfuss girl at your Mom's funeral. Both your parents were so much fun, and welcomed all the neighborhood kids into your home.
They are missed.

Marie, I'd like to extend my sympathy to you on the loss of your father. I think of you often. I was one of your first clients I believe at the beauty shop on Park Avenue. I have kind of followed any articles in the Herald regarding your family. Take care.
