Our dearly beloved Bernice Martin, resident of Bethany Village, passed away on Tuesday, January 16th, with her son, James Martin, at her bedside.
Although 98 years old, Bernice was well known for her vitality and enthusiasm for life.
Prior to moving to Bethany Village, she enjoyed driving independently to various coffee shops to socialize with the locals.
Even after she stopped driving at the age of 91 (with a perfect driving record), Bernice was quick to rise in the morning, summoning the staff at Bethany with an animated "yoo-hoo" or a "come on" indicating she was ready to go for the day.
At age 93, she wasn't afraid to climb on the back of her grandson's 4-wheeler for a joy ride.
She enjoyed a day out with her family and a ride through the country humming along to country music.
She also enjoyed breakfast at Jennz Cafe in Honesdale.
When watching sports, the Phillies where her team of choice.
Above all else dear to her was the deepest love shared with her family.
Bernice was one of six children. She was born in Philadelphia, PA on October 28, 1919, to parents James and Anna Dolan.
She was married to Leo Martin, a staff sergeant in the army.
Previous residences include Fletcher, NC, and St. Cloud, Florida.
In addition to motherhood, Bernice enjoyed walking and bowling, and had various part time jobs in the Philadelphia area, including Philco and the armaments.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Rutter and husband Robert Rutter of NC, son James Martin and wife Kate Baxter of Pleasant Mount PA, two grandchildren, Janine Harris and Jimmy Martin, and two great-grandchildren, Rachael and Christopher Martin.
Many heartfelt thanks to the most loving and caring staff at Bethany Village.
They were not only caregivers, but befriended our beloved Bernice and kept her company, held her hand and shared a laugh while tirelessly caring for their other residents.
Bernie Martin, her energy, spirit and love for life, will truly be missed.
A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bernice's name to the donor's favorite charity.
