Goodbye Alan.
September 28, 2013
You were beloved worldwide, but you never seemed to notice. Love, Dee
September 28, 2013
Dee Allison, Lenny Walker...I met Alan in 1978, though we had all come to L,A, from Akron. We were close friends, and I can say that Alan was one of the best men whom I've ever known. When Laena was about to be born, a perfect house, right behind ours became available. He and Andy Vadnay, my then partner, were best friends. The last photo I have of Alan was at Andy's Memorial, 1991. I wish him peace and love, forevermore.
And, the next time you hear thunder, think of Alan Myers. I will.
Love,
Dee

A truly phenomenal drummer. With his unorthodox and unremitting drumbeats, he made the coolest band that much more cooler. The news of his passing has saddened me. A true musical inspiration. God bless you.
July 01, 2013
Thanks for the music..you'll be missed
June 30, 2013

my favourite musician. A phenomenal musical talent who gave of this really cool vibe. I am deeply saddened by this, but I rejoice in the joy that Alan continues to bring to my life. -boogiemite
June 30, 2013
Alan, sometimes I would sit behind the kit with your Devo stuff in my headphones and play a game where I tried to copy even just a quarter of what you were doing. I couldn't come close, of course. You were the human metronome. A "pattern monkey," I used to call you when describing your drumming enthusiastically to others. I always dreamed of meeting you, and always planned to write you a fan letter, and always hoped you would reunite with Devo and delight us all. Your untimely demise was a shock to so many of us, and the world is a little less creative, a little less compassionate, and a little less beautiful with your passing. I never met you, but I admired you deeply, and not only for your drumming. Everyone spoke of you as highly spiritual, humble, calm, peaceloving, positive, and incredibly creative. I am sorry your light has gone out early, and sorry I never got to meet you, but I am so grateful you existed. Rest in peace.
June 30, 2013
Alan, thank you for all the wonderful sonic vibrations that have rang in my ears for the last 35 years. Biology is destiny!

June 30, 2013
My condolances to the family, may Gods word at Ecclesiates 9:5 prove to be a source of comfort.
June 29, 2013
Devo is one of my favourite bands of all time. Alan Myers is one of the best drummers of all time. I don't play drums, but a friend who does said to me that 5/8th's time is the most difficult for drummers to play and that "Blockhead" is a challenge to many drummers. I loved Devo when I first heard them and still do. It's so sad we lose him now since I understand that Devo is touring this year, but maybe his cancer was such that he would have been unable to tour this time. I don't know the answer to that, it's sad to lose him at all, but it would have been nice to see him and Devo one last time even if he knew his days were limited. Goodbye Alan Myers, and thank so very much for all the great songs. "Smart Patrol", "Gates of Steel", "It's a Beautiful World", and "That's Good" are songs that I love today as much (or even more in a couple of cases!) than when I first heard them and I play them all several dozen times per year.
June 29, 2013
Alan Myers is DEF-INFINITELY a music hero.
June 29, 2013
rest in peace. my mom born in 1903 thought Devo was an innovative band.
June 29, 2013
Alan has continued his journey. I knew him in life as a real person, not a rock star. There were no ivory towers in punk rock, everyone one was street level. I miss that.
June 29, 2013
My deepest sympathies to the family, to DEVO, and may God grant comfort to you all during this time.
June 29, 2013
I had the privilege of seeing Alan play with Devo on the Freedom of Choice and New Traditionalist Tours and he was absolutely stunning. I had always hoped for his return to the band. I am sure he would be surprised at how many people value his contributions to one of the most innovative bands of our time. Peace be with you Alan, you made this world a better place.
June 29, 2013
Love and light!
June 29, 2013
we met post-devo, in a setting that might seem unlikely to those who only knew you as a drummer extraordinaire. there, you kept time on another instrument for a different purpose, and your presence was always steady, grounding, comforting. one evening, over several hours, we sat at a table in a coffee shop with two dear friends, and dissected life in a fearlessly revealing conversation about relationships and music and what lies beyond. i think of you as having landed in that space we envisioned, painted for us by saints and welcomed by the one to whom we were -- are -- so devoted. with love to your family, and a deep pronam to you.
June 29, 2013
Alan was an essential part of my favorite band growing up. I will never forget the first time I saw "Whip It". I instantly became a lifelong fan.
June 29, 2013
Your beat will always be beating in our DEVO hearts.

Alan was the most underrated drummer in the music scene, hearing his drumming on Whip It and Clockout to mention just a few of the Devo songs he played on proved how good he was.

June 29, 2013
Thank you for the music! Rest in Peace
June 29, 2013
I was fortunate to be a friendly acquaintance of Alan's in high school. I always admired his keen sense of humor and vast knowledge of music. Thanks so much, Alan, for making me feel smarter the day I walked into the record store in 1970 to (shamefacedly) buy a Tammy Wynette lp. You applauded my choice and admired my range in music appreciation. I left with my head held high and never felt stupid about what I liked in music again. The world will be a poorer place without you. Peace to you, and to your family and friends.
June 29, 2013
Sorry I did not know Alan as a man and father. He was a humble talent that kept things going.

To Alan & all of his family:

I just want to thank you for the inspiration you've given this young lad. When I first started playing the drums back in middle school, you were (and continue to be) one of my biggest influences. Real musicians know how special you were, give my regards to the Cosmos.
June 29, 2013
Words cannot describe the sheer emptiness and sorrow I feel regarding the death of drummer, Alan Myers. Alan was instrumental in my education as a drummer and motivated me to keep practicing and experimenting as I perfected my craft. His unique style and mechanical precision defined the Devo sound and influenced an entire generation of young drummers, including myself. Furthermore, he was responsible for introducing me to jazz drumming and the incredible style of Elvin Jones. To state simply that he was the drummer of Devo does his memory injustice. He was an extremely talented drummer who loved the primitive essence of percussion, whether it was the electronic beats of later Devo records or keeping time on pots and pans with Skyline Electric. His drumming was the definition of the eclectic cavemen. Although, I never had the fortune of meeting him, he has played an integral role in my life, and my heart is deeply saddened. My condolences and sympathy go out to his family, Devo, and the multitude of loyal Devo fans who awed at his brilliance over the years. Duty Now For the Future and Thank you Alan, may you Rest In Peace.
June 29, 2013
you weren't the first drummer with DEVO, or the last... but you were the ORIGINAL

Cool.In Paradise earth sickness and death will not exist.
June 29, 2013
Alan, you'll be truly truly missed. I can't tell how much i love the devo-songs, especially those that have been held together by your unique style. not unlike what paul thompson did for roxy music, it's the ying to the yang, the earthy foundation to the flamboyancy and hysteria that makes this unique combo of rock and avantgarde. while the geeks run wild, they need to have a solid beat - it couldnt have been done better than the way you did it. my alltime-fave..."gut feeling" ... as if kraftwerk did their take on "house of the rising sun", i have listened to the song a million times and its basis is the steady groove, from the relaxed kickin'-in over snare and toms to the classy git-solo into the galopping punk extravaganza of "slap your mammy". i'm going to listen to it right now, and i'm thinking of you and, of course, your family. r.i.p. - keep drummin!
June 29, 2013
DEVO made punk fun and exciting. You made DEVO amazing! As a drummer myself I can not under estimate the influence you had on me.
June 29, 2013
Huge neverending inspiration. My condoleances.
June 29, 2013
you are not men you are DEVO. and now ? We miss you on earth. You and your DEVO´s changed the world of music in revolution sound. Saw you life 1st time in the early 80´s in Munich and it was the greatest show ever. And when the cocert was end, all people went out in silence, ´cause all get satified perfectly. No need to give any encore. That is part of your music and now part of your live, in respect with tears.
June 29, 2013

June 29, 2013
You were the creative heartbeat to my youth! RIP Spudhead Pablo, UK

Rock on Brother! The best Devo Drummer.
June 28, 2013
To Alan and the Myers family,

As a music fan, artist, and lifelong Devo fan, my deepest condolences. You have lost what seems to be a great son and father. Of all the members of Devo, Alan earned my greatest degree of personal respect. He had a keen and deep commitment to excellence in his craft and the curiosity and desire to experiment with it. When Devo began substituting computer drums for Alan's drumming and using basic beats instead of more complex rhytms, Alan displayed a commendable degree of personal and artistic integrity by leaving. By being a regular guy devoting his time toward raising his daughter and studying philosopy while avoiding fame, he showed humility and intelligence. The experimental music he played in Skyline Electric, Swahili Blonde, and Jean-Paul Yamomoto was more interesting than most of the music Devo had put out since 1983, I admist as a Devo fan. Alan was too underrated. It was his drumming that added the structure and propulsive force to Devo's music. Without him, there would not have been the first three albums. Whip It, their greatest hit, consisted primarily of Alan's musclework and passion. Alan should should be seen as an example of how to be an great artist and a great person.
June 28, 2013
Your music made my life better, and I thank you for sharing your talent with the world.
June 28, 2013
Anyone who got to watch you do your thing was a lucky person. Save us the corner seats. Safe Home.
June 28, 2013
R.I.P. Mr Myers, thank you for sharing your talents, the rhythm of your soul is pleasurably ingrained in all of of us.
June 28, 2013
You gave DEVO its rush and thrill with your amazing drumming. Thank you for devo-ting part of your life to enlightening spuds everywhere.
June 28, 2013
I met Alan in 1982 during the Oh, No! tour. The most gentle and polite rock star; and the most precise drummer ever.
June 28, 2013
r.i.p. the best drummer ever. so creative and innovative.
June 28, 2013
I saw you in '81 in Columbus OH. My 14 year-old brother was the only person who would go to see Devo with me that night. You and Devo will always be among my favorites. Well done, kind sir, and thank you.

June 28, 2013
