Iris Ann Bell (nee Shaw), 89, passed into the arms of the Lord on Monday, June 11, 2018. Her son Kris was with her when she passed.
Iris was born Feb. 10, 1929, in Bonner Springs, Kan., to George Warren "Mike" and Dorothy Alice (Foskett McDanield) Shaw. She was the third of four children. After graduating from Parsons (Kan.) High School, she attended Kansas State University. Iris married Raymond Leroy "Doc" Bell on April 17, 1949, in Bushnell, Ill. After he completed dental school at Washington University in St. Louis, they moved to Quincy in 1953. She bore three sons. After the sons were grown, Iris worked as a nurse's aide before attending Blessing Hospital Nursing School. She became a registered nurse and worked as a public health nurse for the Adams County Health Department from 1972 until she retired in 1988. Iris was a seeker of the Lord and committed to her faith. In Quincy she had been a member of First Presbyterian Church, then joined the Society of Friends (Quaker) Friends Hill Meeting. In her later years she became a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist, in which she served as reader and volunteered in the reading room. She also attended Christian Science training conferences. An avid collector of antiques, Iris had been a vendor in an antique mall in Quincy. She played golf with her husband at Cedar Crest Country Club. After retirement, she traveled extensively, visiting Prince Edward Island and British Columbia, France, Mexico, Hawaii and Dominique. She also drove herself or flew to Idaho for reunions with her sons and daughters-in-law. Iris loved genealogy, tracing both her and her husband's families back to years before the Revolutionary War and to the British Isles. She enjoyed cooking and letter writing, corresponding frequently with family and friends. Iris made friends easily and always had a positive attitude. "Choose to be happy" was her motto. She loved birds, and enjoyed growing flowers and plants in her landscape and gardens. She will be remembered by family and friends as kind, generous and always thinking of others. She was known for her Christmas letters that she continued to write until 2017. In 2016 she moved into the Quincy Senior and Family Center. Iris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1993; and her brothers, Gayle, Warren and Mark Shaw. She is survived by her sons, Timothy Gregg Bell (Marian) of Moscow, Idaho, Kris Edward Bell (Susan) of Eagle, Idaho, and Scott Parker Bell of South Salt Lake City, Utah. I always looked forward to Aunt Iris' Christmas letters. She love to travel and love to visit family. It was a great way to keep up with cousins I did not get to see. I am glad Aunt Pat and I went up to visit a couple of years ago. We had a really good visit and got to spend some time with Kris too. So sorry for your loss Tim, Kris and Scotty. She will be missed by many.

So glad that my sister, Pixie, and I were able to visit with our Aunt Iris last year. Enjoyed spending time with her, hearing stories about her life with our dad growing up. She shared family pictures and recipes with us. Love you, Aunt Iris
