Jerry Shoop Obituary

MAYWOOD, Mo. -- Jerry L. "Mayor" Shoop, 71, of Maywood, died Saturday (July 26, 2014) at Dover.

He was born April 1, 1943, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill., a son of Hubert Alfred and Carlene LaVerne Gronewold Shoop. He married Aloma Virginia Turner on Oct. 23, 1976, in Maywood. She survives.

Jerry graduated from LaGrange High School in 1961. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 1968 and served in the Vietnam War. He received on honorable discharge in March 1970.

He worked at Gardner Denver from 1962 to 2006 when he then retired.

He loved working on old cars, going to auctions and swap meets with his boys as well as trout fishing with his wife. Jerry was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren whom were always the apple of his eye. He was a man who loved to joke around and be with his family and friends. You were always assured a good time and many laughs in his presence. He will be missed by all.

He was baptized at the Zion Church in Ursa, Ill., and later became a member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Quincy.

Survivors include his mother, Carlene Shoop of Maywood; his wife, Aloma Shoop of Maywood; sons, Jason Shoop of Canton and Jamie (Lisa) Schroder of Maywood; a daughter, Theresa Jarland of Rochester; a sister, Peggy (Harold) Wiesemann of LaGrange; grandchildren, Ryan (Tonya) Schroder of LaGrange, Randi (Jeremy) Sparrow of Canton, Sierra and Devin Schroder of Maywood, and Justin and Jared Jarland of Rochester; great-grandchildren, Madison and Brooklyn Sparrow of Canton and Rylee Schroder of LaGrange; along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hubert Shoop.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, in the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing, with the Rev. Russell Brownell officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Dover Cemetery near LaGrange.

VISITATION: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing.

MEMORIALS: American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Heartland Resources or the charity of the donor's choice.

I was saddend to hear of Jerry's death. I was foreman at GD and Jerry and I worked together for may years. He was always cheerful and never unhappy, no matter what job he was given. He will be missed. Al Witte
