Lester John Althoff, 93, of Quincy, died at 12:10 a.m. Sunday, July 10, 2016, at Illinois Veterans Home.
He was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Adams County, a son of Fred W. and Hannah E. Echternkamp Althoff. He married Helen M. Altheide on March 4, 1944, in Quincy. She preceded him in death May 24, 1999. Lester was a 1940 graduate of Quincy High School. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. Lester worked as a mechanic at Bob Meyer Garage for 48 years and worked part time for 15 years for Purolator Courier Corp. He had been a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ. Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne (John) Lyon of Quincy; a daughter-in-law, Jane Althoff of Aledo; two grandchildren, Rebecca Lyon and Caleb Althoff; and a great-grandchild, Jacob Lyon. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cheryl C. Althoff; his son, Richard Althoff; his brother, Merle F. Althoff; and his sister, Martha Herron. SERVICES: 3 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Disseler conducting. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park. VISITATION: 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
