ELVASTON, Ill. -- Jessie Anne Vickers, 90, of Elvaston, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017, at Montebello Health Care Center, Hamilton.
She was born March 26, 1926, in Big Flat, Baxter County, Ark., a daughter of James Monroe and Ruth Ellen Pearl Hites Fariss. She married John "Kenneth" Vickers on July 14, 1941, in Searcy County, Ark. He preceded her in death Oct. 11, 1979. Jessie was raised in Big Flat, Ark., before moving to Elvaston, where she lived for more than 50 years. She was of the Pentecostal faith, attending Family Worship Center in Keokuk, Iowa, and Elvaston Community Church. She worked at Sheller Globe in Keokuk, Iowa, retiring after 25 years, and was a member of United Steelworkers Local 444L. After retirement, she joined Hamilton V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, mowing the yard and canning many vegetables from the garden. She was an excellent cook, especially biscuits and gravy and chocolate gravy. She especially treasured the time spent with her grandchildren. Jessie is survived by four children, Levonda (Roger) Sparrow of Mission, Texas, Loretta (James) Jinkens of Fort Madison, Iowa, Donald (Debbie) Vickers of Harrison, Ark., and Joyce (Randy) Day of Quincy; two daughters-in-law, Marjorie Vickers and Pat Vickers, both of Elvaston; 31 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; and 56 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; two sons, William Junior Vickers and Lenville Leon Vickers; three brothers; two sisters; and five grandchildren, Sharon, Andrew, Doug, Mistie and Donna. SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Lamporte-St. Clair Funeral Home, Hamilton, with the Rev. Doug Campbell conducting. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Hamilton. VISITATION: After 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, with family present 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
