Sorry to hear of Mr Perry's passing. We interviewed him for our oral history program, and I appreciated his willingness to make himself available, even at the age of 100.

I am very sad to hear of Mr. Perry's passing. I was a caregiver for his friend, Ali, and we had so many good times going out to various places and just visiting at their homes. He was really a wonderful gentleman and I will never forget him. I am really in awe of all of his accomplishments and he was a very humble person, and very nice. He will be very missed! Condolances to his family.

Just heard of our longtime former neighbor's passing. He was always friendly and very down to earth. It will be hard to imagine that house with anyone else in it. All our best to the family.

When I found out Hubert had passed, I sobbed. My heart was broken, but I remembered the great memories. I was a caregiver to Hubert. My 12 hour days seemed so short. I would look forward to going over to his house. I always enjoyed being with Mr. Perry. Whether we were out and about here in Whittier, whether it was out for coffee, going to PIH, going to lunch or just sitting at his home reading to him. I would always learn from him. I enjoyed reading the Wall Street Journal to him, Forbes Magazine, The Whittier Daily News and books. He would tell me stories about his life, people he knew, relationships he had, jobs he had, and just about plain old life. He was amazing. No matter where we went, people knew him. They knew who he was, they knew what he has done for the city of Whittier. As I met his friends, doctors, and people he had worked with, They all had great things to say about him about how he made them feel about themselves. That says a lot about someone. Someone who can always be uplifting and such a positive role model. That's what he was to me, of role model, a mentor, and most of all my friend. I cared for him this Thanksgiving 2015, which was the last time I seen him. I knew it would be the last time I seen him, as usual I made sure to tell him how much he meant to me and how much I loved him. I'll never forget his smile. ❤

Dear Perry Family -
The entire Clayton Family wishes you peace as Hubert is celebrated for a life lived to the fullest! Betty and Whit were fortunate to add Hubert and Louise to their circle of friends in the 50's and there are many cherished memories of the Perry Family ever since in Durango, Alamitos Bay, Balboa and Whittier. Were grateful for this association and for the influence for good that Hubert has been in our lives.
Much love to all ! Craig and Meggan Clayton

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Perry. Mr. and Mrs. Perry were very special to us. For nearly 40 years, they were regular customers of our family's restaurants, My Place and My Place Jr. Often, their children and later their grandchildren would join them. When my husband Vincent saw them coming, he would began preparing their favorite dishes: a chili relleno and enchilada for Mr. Perry, and a green chile quesadilla with guacamole for Mrs. Perry. We always made time to visit with them. My husband and Mr. Perry enjoyed talking and laughing together.
Mr. Perry was a very kind and down to earth man. The Ruiz family is blessed to have known the Perry's for more than 55 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I created this portrait of Hubert in 1994. I was interviewing him while creating the images, so he was under the impression the portrait session would be another day. I knew this was a special portrait and his wife told me it was the best portrait he had ever done.
Here is what I read in his amazing portrait; A very strong and powerful man, yet so humble. No designer clothing for Hubert, he stands on his own for what he believes in. Notice his large hands holding a delicate tea cup. My guess is that his wife choose that tea cup, and no matter how manly he was, his love for her was too strong to question the the cup his wife choose. This is what I read, I am sure others who knew Perry will read their own story.
This was the third image taken as I had just arrived and was getting to know him. We talked a lot and shared sailing stories from our past. I remember asking to see his office, he told me no one ever goes in his office, ever... he took me into his office that day, I really felt a connection on his session. I am proud to say he was one of the best male subjects I ever photographed. A truely loving person that put others before him.

I had the great honor of meeting and getting to know Mr. Perry and his lovely wife, Louise, in our restaurant; the Green Arbor Restaurant and Tearoom, at King Richard's. We had the honor of hosting many of their holiday parties and celebrating Mr. Perry's 90th birthday party. Beryl Whiting, (our owner) and I always found him to be a charming, gentle man and a great friend. Brilliant in the ways of finance and down-to-earth as anyone could ever be. He showed great love in everything he did and to all he believed in. He will be surely missed in our community. May God Bless and Comfort his family at this difficult time...

My wife and I have known Mr and Mrs Perry for 16 years. We were honored to have been his neighbors from 2000 to the present day. When my wife and I moved into our home, Mr and Mrs Perry were always available for passionate and very knowledgable conversations as they walked their dog each day. I remember Mr Perry speaking so highly about the city he loved to live in and how far it had come in his lifetime. So many conversations from weather to business and politics to family, Mr Perry was a very well rounded family man. My father and Mr Perry would always meet and converse in his home over tea and desserts whenever they were visiting us. Although my dad never had a chance to say goodbye to Mr Perry, I'm sure he knew he was with him. With a heart of gold and a mind filled with wisdom and love, I will always remember Mr Perry for the person he was, what he stood for as a resident of Whittier and for the life he worked so hard to enjoy. May You rest in peace Sir and thank you for all that you have done for my wife, myself, my children, my parents, our city and humanity. You will be missed.

How does one some up the gifts of service Hubert has contributed to the lives of Whittier? He forever changed not only the face of Whittier but also a nation. As our city grew so did Hubert and other leaders of his time vision for Whittier. Our Greater Whittier YMCA, Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, so many facilities in our greater Whittier schools, housing tracts, and even a leader of the free world, Richard Nixon, was touched by the friendship and vision of Hubert Perry. His legacy will live many hundreds of years beyond his earthly presence. We are blessed to know and have been touched by this great man. God Bless you Hubert and your family.

I had the privilege of interviewing him for a paper I was writing while attending Whittier College. What really impressed me was his humility despite his outsized impact on Whittier as well as the state and national politics.

Hubert Perry was a good friend of my parents, Bob and Pat Janda, for many many years. As a child, I basked in his warm and friendly smile. As an adult, I admired him as a renaissance man and for the way he combined boundless energy with a serene calm. The Janda family will very much miss Hubert!

In September Kyle and I from the Whittier Museum visited Hubert and tried to record a video remembrance of his life. Unfortunately, we had waited too long.
But two years ago Hubert was still lucent and rather animated. It was an honor to know this great and humble man.
I will forever be grateful for knowing him and calling him a friend.
There's a story I wrote during Hubert's 100th birthday. People can access it at www.411whittier.com
RIP Mr. Perry. Your legacy in Whittier, and in the world, will last forever.
