I worked with Charles at Mass Audubon.....just ran into a mutual friend ...and was asking about Charles. I thought I would try to reconnect...so very sad that I waited too long.

The environmental movement in Massachusetts has lost a great champion with Chuck's passing. Ever the "Nature Teacher" Chuck was an amazing naturalist and an amazing artist. His artistic mentor was Phoebe Erickson, whom he called Eric. Through Eric, Chuck met Thornton W. Burgess, a writer of children's nature stories and a conservationist for whom Eric illustrated several books. I met Chuck many years ago at a MEES (Mass Environmental Ed Society) Conference. Our paths crossed many times over the years. He visited the nature center where I work and even graced a group of teachers with a nature walk out in the Dear Old Briar Patch. I visited Chuck in Jaffrey, NH and recorded his memory of Burgess for our 2010 Centennial Celebration of Old Mother West Wind. Chuck would always say when we met how much I looked like his mother. Even back in my mid thirties that was a compliment to me for I could see in his eyes the tender love he had for his mother. May future generations of naturalists find inspiration in Chuck's books and illustrations. My life has been forever enriched by his presence.

My deepest condolences to the family during this most difficult time. There are no words that can ease the pain of losing someone so beloved. May you find comfort and peace in knowing that your loved one is in God's memory, because those who pass on are precious in his eyes. Psalms 116:15i
