" Teresa there go your knights in shining armor' it is an unforgettable scene in the classic movie "The Miracle". Whenever I will think of John that is what I will always remember; John Rainey was brave, courageous, loyal, honorable, a brilliant man in all aspects of his life, appreciative of all beauty, full of kindness, understanding of others foibles, a true "gentle" man. I loved, admired, and liked him, I will miss him forever, and I am honored he called me his friend. His family can be infinitely proud of him, not for his "accomplishments", accomplishments are soon forgotten, but because of his character, kindness to others, his honor, his integrity, his special soul, these qualities will survive long past his death, and remain with us forever as an inspiration and challenge on how to live our own lives. One only dies when one is forgotten John Rainey will never die.

John and I were KA fraternity brothers at the University of Virginia. It's not that John did not party, but he partied less than most of us and was more serious minded that most of us. John and I also roomed together for part of our first year in law school at the University of South Carolina until I got a better roommate - my wife. It irritated me that John always made as good as, and in most cases better, grades than I did -except for one very boring course- although he studied infinitely less than I did. John was just very intelligent and very focused. He accomplished much in life, but that is no great surprise. My sincere condolences to all of John's family.

Dear Robert,
This was a tender hearted man. I really had no idea. He set the bar high for the rest of us. Thinking of you. Van Sulliva Sr.
