Many of us at Northeastern University just learned of Dan's passing and are quite saddened. He was a kind, thoughtful and generous colleague, for which I was especially appreciative when I arrived in the Department of Biology as a junior faculty member. I feel I can speak for all my NU colleagues in saying that he will be fondly remembered.

A wise individual once said, "Some people believe that money and material possessions are the true measure of a man's life. The true measure of a man is his character, who he was loved by, who was loved by him, and the mark he leaves on the world. The true measure of a man's character is not what others see him do, but what he does and how he lives his life when no one is watching." This quote defines the life and the impact Dan had on his students and on me. He will remain on my mind and in my heart, always.

Dean Scheirer was a great mentor, and will be missed by the Duke Community. My deepest condolences to his family.

Dean Scheirer was a loving, compassionate and caring pre-health advisor that helped me and dozens of other undergraduate students think through their dreams and aspirations in life and medicine. I will forever remember his wise words of comfort during some of my most difficult times at Duke.
