Very sorry to hear of Joe's death. He was a viable classmate and fought his disease hard. He'll be missed.
January 22, 2017
Dear Mary Ellen,
From the time I was a little boy playing on the swing set in your yard, singing songs from Disney's classic cartoon movie SNOW WHITE, to one summer night when I was feeling so very ebullient that even though I was no longer a child, I started skipping down Cross Street, unaware that you and Joe were sitting on the brick step in front of your home watching me with considerable amusement, to a roller coaster ride of events throughout the succeeding decades, my admiration, respect, and affection for you and Joe has continued to grow. Both you and he have dealt with your adversities with wonderful, patience, grace, kindness, and affection for each other.
Now, after a very long, difficult struggle for both you and Joe, with his illness, he is at peace. And I do so very much hope you will have some restful and peaceful time.
I wanted so much to attend funeral services tomorrow for Joe so I could express my condolences to you and your children and grandchildren in person; however, I have been having some health issues of my own, for which I was hospitalized for most of last week, only coming home yesterday and not being able to do much yet. Nevertheless, please know that my not being able to see all of you tomorrow not withstanding ,my condolences are no less sincere when I offer them to you in this note.
My thoughts and prayers still include you and Joe, as well as the rest of your family.
Sincerely, and with much love,
Henry
