Bill, told me that after boot camp he was posted to Fort Knox, KY. He was in training for a new tank Battalion. He was a "Buck" Sargent.
One weekend he and another "Buck Sarge" went into nearby Lexington, KY for the weekend.
They noticed a lot of activity, but went to a hotel bar anyway. This is the south so only hotels could serve booze. They were sitting at the bar having a drink when a elderly gent came over and introduced himself. He then proceeded to make both of them his guests for the weekend !! He fed them and put them up even.
He said this is the least he could do for "our boys". He even took them to the "Kentucky Derby" which was running that weekend.
Bill, said it was like nothing he ever saw. What a weekend !!

What a guy !! One of the "GREATEST GENERATION.'
