John F. Duffey Jr., age 93, of Scituate, passed away peacefully July 14, 2014, with family at his side. Beloved husband of the late Mary Carmel (Manning) Duffey, he was the devoted father of Joseph Duffey and wife Cathy of Scituate, Michael Duffey and wife Debbie of Louisville, Ky., Thomas Duffey of Scituate, Moira Carpenter of West Hartford, Conn., and Brendan Duffey of Scituate; loving grandfather of 12 adoring grandchildren; brother of Edward Duffey of Scituate, Katie Hunt of Maine, and the late Billy, Jimmy, Danny, Bobby and Harold Duffey. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Duffey, a lifelong Scituate resident, was born at the foot of Third Cliff and spent his early years caddying at the Scituate Country Club and mossing off of Peggotty Beach. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. Upon his return from the war, Mr. Duffey became a lobsterman and later joined the Scituate Police Department, retiring as a Sergeant. He was an avid sportsman who loved hunting, the outdoors and golf. A Mass of Christian burial and celebration of life was held Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at 12 p.m. in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate Harbor. Visiting hours were Monday, July 21, 2014, from 5-8 p.m. in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 160 So. Main St. (across from St. Anthony Church), Cohasset. Interment in St. Marys Cemetery, Scituate. Our sincerest of condolence to the Duffey family. I believe my husband Jim Mc Tavish was a cousin of John's. We are not able to attend the wake as Jim recently had bypass surgery and a stroke. Prayers will be said for John.
