I was Walter's "Chicago Insurance Man".I got to know him when he played with the Chicago Packers (Zephyrs). When I first met Walt he came to my Chicago Office and hit his head on the door jamb.. We often laughed about that and the fact that he loved Simpson Clothiers in Chicago-- because the could fit him!!! Although my contact with Walter was somewhat limited, I always felt a certain closeness to this giant of a man.. God bless him!!! dartman (john dart wadsworth axa-equitable)1-312-321-5240 - for Helen

November 08, 2013
Dear Family,

Your loved one was a wonderful motivator. He served as the speaker during the sports banquet for the students at Frank L. Stanton Elementary School. The students and parents were really inspired by his message. We truly appreciate his willingness and talent to motivate students to become all that they can be, yet admonishing them not to get caught up in false pride. He certainly remained humbled and giving in spite of his fame and success. Additionally, he was one of my husband's good friends and they worked together with the Omega Y's Men. Truly we will miss him. My husband, Preston Denson, passed away two years ago. So, we can truly identify with your pain.

That God will comfort you and give you peace is our prayer for you.

Stay prayerful,
Barbara Harper Denson & Family

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you during this time of sorrow. Walt and my father Sam Newberg kept in touch from the time Walt came to IU to begin his schooling. Dad was his advisor, teacher, mentor then friend. He told me many stories of their times together, including finding a tutor for him who eventually became his wife. Walt was so kind to me when my father passed in 2009. I pray for you at this time. Now Walt can pray for us while he talks hoops and life with god.

Walt and I lived next door to each other at IU; what a great guy! We had a lot of laughs together and he was a great friend. His visits to my parents home in Seymour were memorable as I think he enjoyed the home cooking. The infrequent letters we shared since our IU days were always welcome. He was a great basketball player, but a greater person. Our sympathies are extended to his family.

It was a pleasure to have known "Dr. Bells" when he played for the Atlanta Hawks. His career in the NBA and at Indiana University speaks for itself. He was from a different era in college basketball. He got a degree and an education and was involved in social and political causes. And he had a sense of humor that often lightened some of the bad days the Hawks had in the 1970s. Condolences to his family. Walt leaves a memory of having made a difference.
November 04, 2013
As a basketball FANatic engaged in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame I was blessed with the opportunity to have met and conversed with Bells and found him to be an awesome human being, a phenomenal basketball talent, a dynamic wealth of knowledge on the game of basketball then and now, with so much wisdom of life in general and countless stories that left you with little nuggets of life lessons.

The basketball community has lost a precious gem indeed. The world has lost a gentle giant, a beautiful soul, a great mentor and a friend.

To the Bellamy family, my thoughts, prayers and condolences are with you during this time. I personally want to say THANK YOU! THANK YOU for sharing Walter 'Bells' Bellamy with all of us.

R.I.P. Walt! You are probably already dribbling the ball and flying around the court taking those game winning shots being even more amazing on God's team then you were on man's team! You will be deeply missed. You are a CHAMPION yesterday, today and forever!

I had the opportunity to meet Walt Bellamy some years ago while working on a local political campaign in the City of Atlanta. Being a student of Old School Basketball, I was always spell bound by the stories he shared about NBA Basketball back in the day. I offer my prayers and condolecents to the family. RIP MY BROTHER!

i was 5 or 6 yrs old when my dad took me to a summer basketball game. walt was playing. after the game i went to ask him for his autograph. i told him how much i loved b-ball. to my surprise he asked me if i wanted to shoot around. he even held mu pu in the air for a shot. he's the reason i am an iu fan. as i got older i realized what kind of man he was. he didn't have to take the time play with a little boy but he did. that was about 55 yrs ago .

My heart goes out to you at this time. I am truly sorry for your loss. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Reading Psalms 121 is a very comforting scriptural passage. There you will find assurance of God's support as well. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
