Add a message to the Guest Book
When I was in fifth grade, back in the early 60s, we had a letter writing assignment and picking a pen pal. I asked Coach Royal to be mine. There was nothing more exciting than coming home from school one day and seeing an envelope from the University of Texas. I proudly took the letter to school the next day to show the World! And we continued to correspond, Coach Royal answering every letter I sent. He was always thoughtful and encouraging, even when I sent him plays with a few extra players on the field. Later, when my brother, a student at UT, went to his office to ask him to sign "Darrell Royal Talks Football" for my Christmas present, Coach Royal had a folder with my letters. The book still sits prominently in my bookcase.
I will never forget that experience or Coach Royal.
