I was born in 1941 and as a child going to school was told of the sacrifices our soldiers had made on our behalf. While I thought this to be very noble I would not truly understand, until I was an adult, what this really meant. As a young man working for Chrysler I met two men who had been captured by the Germans at Dieppe. One of them would occasionaly tell us a story about being a POW. The other would never talk about it. Two different men with two different ways of dealing with the past. This would be my first experience of hearing, first hand, about the horror's of war. Ever since that time when I meet a Veteran I offer my hand in thanks for what he did for me. John(Red) Cole passed away several years ago. The, other, Walter Hamel, left us just this week. I am very proud to have known these two Canadian heroes and I think of them many times each year. I am against all war but I realize that those who fight them do not create them. Please, when you cross the path of a Veteran, shake his hand and thank him for his sacrifice. You will both feel better for it.
