Herb was a very good friend of my Mom and Dad. (Warren and Mildred Grove) Dad passed away five weeks ago. Now they are together.

Herb was a friend and Masonic colleague of my father, Paul. I first came to know him when I started helping him gather volunteers for the Salvation Army Bell Ringers among my students at Alexander Middle School in Nekoosa. When I tried to nominate him for Wis Rapids Citizen of the Year in the late 1990's, I was advised that he had already been recognized 40 odd years earlier and I was WAY too late! The finest example of a kind soul, a good citizen, and a brave and selfless human being I have ever had the honor to know. God's speed old friend. "He who serves his fellows is of all his fellows greatest."

Truly a great man and one of the greatest examples of a mason, but as a man and person. I have known Herb my entire life. From the times when I was a child helping yo push wheel chairs in the veterans hospital. He was a brother mason who sent a personal birthday card to each brother every year. He was the finest , true example of what being a Christian , really was about. He did what he did out of the love he had in his heart. How fortunate that I was lucky to have known him and how fortunate for heaven to have such a great man in their presence. He will continue his travels there.

He was an amazing man. He gave of himself tirelessly and yet, effortlessly! He was always thinking of others. I remember all the years he'd show up at the end of our church bazaar and buy out all the bakery and candy! He'd keep it in his freezer and delivery it to shut ins! Just one example of his generosity!

Herb was a beloved member of our church for a number of years. He would set out a glass of water for the pastor and hand out candy to the children. We visited him at King and had to track him down because he was always helping others.
