Martin Gadow Obituary

Gadow, Martin J.

Martin John "Bud" Gadow, age 74, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2014 at Strawberry Lane Medical and Rehabilitation Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

Services will be at 6:00 P.M. on Friday, May 9, 2014 at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post 442. Burial will be at a later date at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until the time of services on Friday at the funeral home.

Martin was born April 5, 1940 in Highland Park, Illinois to Martin E. and Lillian E. (Stoeckmann) Gadow. He grew up in Wisconsin Rapids, attending Immanuel and Howe Schools and graduated from Lincoln High School. While in high school, Martin worked for Church's Drug Store. His marriage to Patricia Mooney ended in divorce.

Martin served his country in the United States Coast Guard from 1958 to 1968. His duties included tours in Adak, Alaska, Honolulu, Hawaii, Naha, Okinawa and two tours in Vietnam. His stateside duties included Seattle, Washington, Cape May, New Jersey, and the Great Lakes areas of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron. His major duties were as chef and he achieved the rank of Commissary First Class.

Martin managed a Walgreen's Pharmacy in Greenville, Michigan from 1968 to 1978 and was the owner/manager of a clothing store from 1978 until his retirement in 1988. After retiring from the clothing store, he moved to Wisconsin Rapids and was a longtime employee of Higgins Funeral Home and Higgins Ambulance Service. He continued his employment at United Emergency Medical Response and also worked as a caregiver for several area residents.

Martin liked working with the Boy Scouts of America. When he came to Central Wisconsin, he became reunited with the Boy Scouts as a Unit Commissioner for a number of Cub Packs and Boy Scout Troops. Martin was very interested in and helped form a Boy Scout Troop for those with special needs in this area. Involvement with this troop, which is sponsored by the local Rotary Club, was a very special part of his long scouting career. In February 2006, Martin was awarded the highest honor an adult scout can achieve, the "Silver Beaver Award".

He was a Lifetime Member of the Disabled American Veterans, and was also a member of the American Legion Joseph White Post 442.

Martin is survived by one son, Shane (Natalie) Gadow of Wisconsin Rapids; one daughter, Shannon (Steven) Browning of Greenville, Michigan; one brother, William (Annette) Gadow of Wisconsin Rapids; three grandchildren: Krista, Brittany and Michael; two great-grandchildren, Wesley and Sophia; and a nephew, Brian (Beth) Gadow of Wisconsin Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents.

South Street neighbors from the late 70's and early 80's really loved Mr. Gadow's pizza nights and world class smoked jerky.

Bud is leaving a legacy in the Scouting program as E-Ru-Tan and his leadership with the special needs troop. I will miss his big smile, laughter and stories. I know your up in that camp in the sky sharing a campfire with the other great leaders from our district and council.
