YORK Bernard P. Althoff, 90, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Autumn House-East. He was the husband of Marian E. (Kline) Althoff, who died December 12, 2013. Prior to her death, Mr. and Mrs. Althoff were married for 65 years. Born August 29, 1924, in York, he was the son of the late Leo and Martha (Weimer) Althoff. Bernard was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service May 30, 1986, after serving 38 years as a mailman. Bernard was a 1942 graduate of York Catholic High School. He was a member of St. Paul's Wolf's Evangelical Covenant Church. Bernard is survived by three sisters, Josie Flinchbaugh of Panama City, Fla., Katie Randall of York, and Martha Ann Winter of Allen City, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Leo, Jim, Richard, and Tom Althoff; and a sister, Lizzie Saltzgiver. The family would like to thank all of the very special people at Autumn House-East for the seven years of great care and love and to Grane Hospice for making him very peaceful and comfortable. He was a sweet and gentle man who will be missed by all. A funeral service will be Monday, October 13, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York, with Chaplain Keith A. Searfoss of Grane Hospice officiating. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Paul's Church Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 3544 N. Karen, and Family. It was an Honor to take care of "Uncle Ben" during my time at Autumn House. He was such a sweetie. He is in a better place now (with "Aunt Marian"). I will be thinkinng about you all on Monday.
