SHREWSBURY Ed "Fast Eddie" Behrens, III, 70, died Monday, January 21, 2013, at York Hospital. He was the husband of Dee (Sluder) Behrens. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 28, 2013, from Christ Lutheran Church, 105 S. Main St., Shrewsbury, with the Rev. Dione M. Klepetka officiating. Viewing will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. Following cremation, interment will be at the convenience of the family. He was born April 17, 1942, in Lutherville, Md., a son of Bess (Garland) Behrens of New Hamburg, N.Y., and the late Leonard E. Behrens, Jr. Following graduation, Ed served his apprenticeship as a Tool & Die Maker at DieCraft in Sparks, Md. Following 35 years of service as a Manufacturing Engineer with Northrup Grumman in Linthicum, and the former Westinghouse in Hunt Valley, Ed retired in 2001. While employed with Westinghouse, he received the coveted Silver Signature Award of which he was very proud. Following retirement, Ed had a mission to take that time and give back to his church, spend more time with his family and enjoy woodworking, gardening, and cooking. He served as Treasurer of Christ Lutheran Church for six years. For 30 years "Fast Eddie" enjoyed playing with his "Poker Buddies" every month. He is survived by five children, Ward Behrens and his wife Carol of Glen Rock, Laurie Moore and her husband, Dave of Winter Spring, Fla., Bonnie Behrens of Winter Spring, Fla., Charlotte Dubel and her husband, Larry of Glen Rock and Patty Grieb and her husband, Rusty of Glen Rock; two sisters, Joan Kay and Jane Murray of New Hamburg, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ed was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Alice Behrens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Christ Lutheran Church, 105 S. Main St., Shrewsbury, PA 17361; or The Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org.

Seven years have gone by. How I still Love you and miss you. This month has been a time of remembering you and all the things we went through,
Living in a new house for the past three years have been a learning experience for me. I have made some good decisions and some not so good.
I had my first gathering this past Sunday to share the Christmas collections that I have gotten over the past 30 years. Charlotte cooked (she has her own cooking business now) . You would be so proud of her and all the children and grand children. There are 11 great grandchildren now.Patty has 3, Charlotte has 3, Laurie has 1 and Mary has 4.You would love them all. Adelyn, Aaron's daughter was born on my birthday and looks and acts like me. I am so very Blessed
I often wonder what life would be like now if you had lived. I know I need to move forward and I am trying. I just have to trust in God to guide me. Love you forever. Dee

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you Dee and the rest of the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Aaron always spoke to us about his grandfather and how special he was. When we finally got to meet Ed we found out what he meant. What a wonderful man. We always enjoyed talking with him at family events. He would always have such intersting stories to share. Dee and Ed welcomed us into their home to share crabs and enjoy some good homecooking done by Ed. We will always hold on to those special memories. He will be so missed.

We are the Poker Boys, of which Ed (also known as Fast Eddie) was a member. In 1976 a small group of guys from work decided we should play poker. We decided that the first Friday following our monthly pay check was the best day of the month to play because that was the only day we were all sure to have money. We drank cases of beer, told bawdy jokes, most smoked, we snacked on chips and peanuts, and we played till 2AM. As the decades have passed the snacks have become elaborate meals and we drink far less than a single case of beer. We now quit at midnight, no one smokes, and no one can remember jokes. Our hair has become thinner and whiter and our waistlines grew, but the strength and depth of our friendships grew too. Oh we'll probably fill Fast Eddie's seat at the table as we have when we lost other members, but Fast Eddie could never be replaced nor will he be forgotten. A better friend, a better man, than Fast Eddie Behrens is few and far between.
So Eddie one last time we the Poker Boys say this to you… Deal'm !
