Undoubtedly Nels was a wonderful husband and father. One could tell that by the way Jackie, Kris and Jill loved him. I knew him as an inspiring teacher, as did so many others at Allegheny College. Nels could reduce knowledge, as Mencken put it, to the obvious and wonderful. He taught by asking questions, not by giving the answer, and that made what we learned priceless. At this point Nels would probably say something humorous about how the rising price of tuition might prove me wrong. His memory will live on, not only in those who loved him as family, but in those of us who were inspired by him as students.
Jackie, Kris and Jill—thank you for sharing Nels with us. You are in our prayers.
