Richard Shambaugh Obituary

Richard "Rick" Shambaugh passed peacefully on October 28, 2014 with a close friend at his side. He was a 1977 graduate of Central York High School where he was a standout on the football team and a 1981 graduate at Albright College in Reading. He was a member of the ZOE fraternity. He worked in Los Angeles for many years, first with the Bernstein Company, and later with the Chiat-Day Advertising Agency as a film editor. He was responsible with his team for the Energizer Bunny commercials and many of the Gatorade and Nissan ones. He is survived by his mother and father, William and Dolores Shambaugh; a sister, Sheryl; and by his brother, Thomas. He will be deeply and seriously missed by his family and the many friends he has made and cared about during the ever so short period of time he had.

I miss you my friend. There was no one like you. We had some great times and great talks. I take comfort knowing you are where you want to be and that your struggle is over. You now know how much you were loved---truly loved. I was just missing you---I knew it was coming up on a year since you left us. I'm glad I found this page before it was taken down. We miss you Rick Shambaugh. (AKA: Rambo)
You were one of a kind and I'm glad I knew you. With much Love.

Rick, I never got the chance to reach out to you about your set coordinator work on The Munsters Today with Arthur Company. You had an impressive career and touched many people's lives. For that, the world will be eternally grateful and joyous.

Rick - Looking back it's becoming easier for me to recognize that your life was your art. A passionate and crazy mix of Hunter Thompson and Monte Python with The Book of John and Revelations through a frenetic Jackson Pollack lens. Man, there were many times when you made me crazy and your "Shambaugh Logic" confounded me, and yet we shared some of the best times of my life. You were an open book of unique intellect, creative thinking, excitement and deep truth-seeking. Worrisome potential consequences were usually refreshingly absent during our action planning, and I have many of my best memories of those times together. The deeply honest conversations we shared about life, the good, bad, and ugly can never be matched, and it's difficult now at those times when I feel the need to talk to someone who really knows me. The amazing thing to me is how you have similarly affected so many others in the same way.

Looking back, I feel as though you were slowly, slowly being pulled out of this life and into the next for the last 30 years, and the scales began tipping more in the last several when things seemed to be getting heavier for you. The oddest experience of my life was when your nurse looked at me and said, "He's gone". I remember collapsing in the chair and howling, yet in only moments I felt such relief, followed by actual joy! Never in my life would I have expected to feel that. I know that came from you, and I felt instantly at peace for you!

It is still comforting to know that you are at peace, even though you are terribly missed by me, and obviously so many others.

Thanks for everything, Rick.
I love you brother.

I worked with Rick at The Arthur Company back in the late 1980s. I always remember his wonderful smile and fun sense of humor.

It wasn't until I met up with him several years later, while he worked at Chiat/Day and I at POP, that I witnessed his passion and zest for life. I truly regret not getting to know him more and wish I had taken him up on his offer to go out sometime.

Several times throughout the years, I thought about dropping him a line and saying "hi", but never did, and for that, I am so sad that I did not.

It truly goes to show us all to enjoy everyone while we can and grab life with both hands, because you never know when we will not have the chance again.

Rick was a very talented editor and made every project he touched better. He also cared deeply about the people he worked with, it was more than just a job for him, creativity was his vocation and calling. He helped my sister and brother in law professionally and personally in more ways than can be mentioned. We all miss his smile. May his family find comfort in these words and my prayers for all if you.

We lost a friend. For some of us, we lost the kind of friend we can not replace. The ones we knew from childhood. The kind of friend where it isn't just about the things you freely can discuss but it also about the things that do not need to be said.
We will all miss Rick's sense of humor, talent, and intelligence. Each of us will try to find comfort from his passing and we all wish his family healing and Godspeed.
For us, his friends, we are left with the memories and the good times...and those unsaid conversations. Good Bye old friend...until we talk again.

I had the privilege of knowing Rick on both a personal and a professional level. He was intense, charismatic; he was funny and interesting; his energy was electric, as he cared deeply about everything that he did. Whether he was concentrating on music, nature, film editing or romantic relationships, Rick gave wholly of himself.

I hadn't seen Rick in years, but did connect with him a few times recently, and I'm so grateful for those exchanges just earlier this year.

I've attached a wonderful photo of the two of us circa 1996, when we both worked at Chiat/Day together.

I am sending my very sincere condolences to his family and close friends.

Rick Shambaugh will live on in the hearts and memories of those he has left behind.

Ricky,
I'm still dealing with a lot of mixed emotions (anger, frustration and intense sadness at times). You were so handsome, but still shy, silly and goofy. So unbelievably talented, but so damn stubborn! You wore your heart on your sleeve, there for everyone to see. I loved you dearly, will miss you greatly and will always hold a place for you in my heart.
Your friend,

Rick was a joy to coach and to be around. He so loved playing football and was an inspiration to others with his dedication and positive attitude. We ran into each other at the White Rose in York about two years ago and fondly reminisced his successful football years in high school. He was a son his parents could be most proud of.

My sympathies to the Shambaugh family. Although I hadn't been in touch with Rich for many years, I still have memories of playing in Clearsprings with him, Mark Wolfgang, and Bob Inners.
