Doris Twitchell Obituary

Doris Lorraine Twitchell

Doris Lorraine Twitchell was known as many things to many people. She was a devoted daughter, a special aunt, great aunt, great-great aunt, a loving sister, a dedicated co-worker, a friend and a loved one. To family and friends who knew her best, Doris will be remembered as an outstanding individual. She was born Dora Lorraine on June 1, 1917 at home in Rosalind, Alberta, Canada. She was the daughter of Chester and Olivia Twitchell.
The family moved to the State of Washington in 1923 and lived in Cashmere for about a year before moving to Everett where she lived the rest of her life. Doris was raised with eight total brothers and sisters. She had five brothers, Eugene, Melvin, Robert, Myrvin (all deceased) and Glen (survivor), and three sisters, Alice, Mary and Olivia (all deceased). Doris graduated Everett High School in 1936. Always considered a "good" friend to those she knew. She loved people and doing things and going places (traveling). Her entire life was centered on other people and making them happy. Doris enjoyed a broad group of acquaintances and several very close friends during her lifetime; Tressa, Vivian, Hazel, Pokey, and Esther.
Doris enjoyed what she did for a living. Doris worked diligently and did her best to succeed in her career as one of the first female Snohomish County Deputy Sherriff and served in that capacity for twenty-seven years. Doris was a Marine Corp. Veteran. She was in the depot of Supplies. Doris saw action for World War II and was stationed in San Francisco. Through her hard work, she achieved the rank of Sergeant. Her fellow soldiers viewed her as a sister in arms and knew that she was as much a part of their family as their loved ones back home. Doris enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. She loved to cook. She would send recipes into the Herald for many years. She loved to travel and to garden. She loved to knit and sew. She used to sew all of her own clothes when she was young. She made flannel blankets for all the newborn babies in the family; and embroidered pillow cases for everyone who got married in the family. And she took photos of everything! Throughout her life, Doris was a doer and was always actively involved in professional and community organizations. Doris lived at home with her Mom and cared for her until her death in 1989. Throughout her later years, she was the 2nd woman in the U.S. to serve as 'commandant' of the Marine Corps. League.
Doris' faith was important to her. She was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Parish with her mother Olivia for most of her life. Doris enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. Favorite vacations included Hawaii with friend Tressa who she worked with at the Sherriff's Office and New Zealand to visit her niece and family, Hawaii again to rendezvous with her nieces and another time to come and stay with a different niece and family who was living in Hawaii at the time and also to Canada to visit relatives. She would travel to California every year with Glen and Polly to visit her niece and family. Doris was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. One of her favorites was her big black and white cat, Barney, Mr. McGoo her 'six-toed' cat and BeG her grey part-Terrier poodle. When Doris' retirement finally arrived in October 1, 1982, she was well prepared.
Doris passed away on March 19, 2009 at Clare Bridge at Silver Lake. She fought a very tough battle with dementia. She was a person who always knew everyone's Birthdays and addresses. Anytime you needed to know about someone in the family or at work, you could go to Doris. So it was undoubtedly more difficult for her to fight this disease.
She is survived by her brother, Glenn (Polly) Twitchell; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A public visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Monday, March 30, at Evergreen Funeral Home. Funeral Services with honors will be 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 31, at Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, Everett.

What a wonderful tribute to a beautiful lady. I only wish that I had known Doris better. My Mom (Gladys) worked with her in the 60s and always had a good word to say about her. I saw Doris several years ago with Mom and some of the other gals for a Birthday get-together and she was still sharp in spite of it all. As fellow Peace Officers I believe they both are in the presence of the "Prince of Peace" now - May He comfort your hearts at this time.

Doris will be greatly missed. When I was employed by Snohomish County, I enjoyed many activities with Doris and kept in touch with her over the years, exchanging birthday cards and she always kept me informed of the comings and goings of the people we worked with. I have many of her recipes and use them also. My last conversation with her was 2 years ago and her dementia was evident at that time. May she rest in peace with her Lord and Savior and may the good memories her family enjoyed with her, help to guide them through this trying time.

I knew Doris through work at the Sheriff's Office and also as Aunt Doris, as I am a friend of her niece, Shannon. Doris always had the best recipes to share, - and dinner and cookies once a week for Shannon's family. I always admired that tradition that Joel and Colin will remember. Her "Kids Favorite Cookies" recipe is one of my most treasured. I was blessed to know her. Marylou Hart

I worked my entire law enforcement career with Doris, in all of that time I never, ever, heard her complain, not once ! She was a really nice person and will be missed.
