I celebrate the life of Rory Miggins! He truly took a huge bite out of life. I knew Rory when I lived in Houston in the early 1980's. It was clear that he loved his family, friends, music, Texas, and his Irish heritage. These photos were taken on St Patricks Day about 1982. Blessings to Rory and his family!

I am sorry I didn't learn of this huge loss until recdently. Rory was one of the people I alway expected to see somewhere around town.
My old friend Charlotte Peterson and I would have dinner with Rory and Anna frequently in the 1980's, and we helped him open Local Charm in 1985.
Here is Rory Miggins in the 2002 Art Car parade. It is a perfect pose for him.

Dear Miggins family, I am just now seeing this and I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. Of course, I remember Rory as such a small and precious child. You may not remember me, but I lived on Avalon where it intersected Westgate. My name is Donna Field and I had 2 small daughters, Kristin and Kim, when you knew me. Eileen, Kathleen and Noreen were my first baby-sitters and I marveled at how organized your home was and how there was always such an abundance of love. I remember each child looking out for a younger sibling. When my daughter Kim was born, they all came to see her, like they had never seen a baby before. Yours is such a special family and I am sure your precious son will be missed by all who knew him.
Many blessings to you and your family.
Love,

I just heard about Rory on a recent visit home. Hard to believe, "The Legend", gone. Even when I was in grade school, I went to St. Annes with Maureen, he was already a legend, and the one Miggins I never got to meet. All the stories about him and his exploits, he was a real rebel. I thought he sounded like the coolest big brother ever. It's funny now reflecting on St. Annes and the Miggins family that I realize that I've held them as the gold standard for "Irish" and "Catholic" and "Family" all my life. "Rory" was the first name uttered when Noreen would rattle off the kids names in order of birth. She could do it sooo fast it made me laugh all the time.
Keep strong hearts Mr. and Mrs Miggins and hold your family close. That's always been the Miggins way.

Just wanted to leave condolences from two cousins of Rory's from England. Although I never met Rory, my sister Zena thinks she did in Woodford, many years ago when they were just babes. On reading the entries we have missed out on not knowing him and can only judge by the wonderful messages that he was well loved. Nevertheless we send our support and love to all those friends and family now learning to live without him.

Dear Miggins Family,
Please accept my condolences on the loss of your son. I met him only once. He was warm and friendly-extending an invitation to visit the bar. Unfortunately for me, I didn't take him up on his offer. The Jewish religion has a beautiful saying regarding the loss of loved ones: "Those we love never die, but live on in the hearts of those who loved them."
Sincerely,

As the wife of a musician who performed at Local Charm, many of my evenings were spent there. I would stand in the back, watching the crowd and Rory as he greeted everyone with a big smile and open heart. He took the time to make everyone feel welcome and lived by his motto that you were only a stranger once. His departure saddens me and he will be missed by many.

Back in the 80's I spent many long nights at Rory's Local Charm when I was married to a musician who often played there. Rory was always a really good guy. He even packed each member (and wifes) a to-go bag with one of his homemade sandwiches at the end of every show. He helped supply me with some great memories! May he rest in peace.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Miggings Family on the loss of their first born son and oldest brother. Rory was always ready with a smile and a friendly hello, not to say Local Charm didn't give him a wee bit of aggrivation at times. I always enjoyed seeing him at the many events we both attended. A friend to me for 18 years, I will miss him dearly at the Art Car Parade and at Blues Venues and other Houston events that he loved. God Bless this Angel.

The presence of the Miggins family is among the most inspiring experiences I have ever encountered. Rory's visitation and funeral service left no aspect of his multi-dimensional, colorful character uncelebrated. Many thanks to each of you for sharing this profound experience so unselfishly.
Growing up at St. Anne's, I always knew the Miggins but didn't really meet Rory until '03. It was only weeks after my Irish mother's death. Those visits to Kingston St. and being at the 50th anniversary party were a light and blessing during a difficult passage. You are angels who forever remind me of my mom, the person who loved me most. Kathleen's & Larry's stories of their times with my Grandfather, Patrick O'Connor from County Clare, are like classic songs to my ears-always wonderful to hear time and time again.
In addition to introducing me to a less up tight way to live, more dives than I ever knew Houston had, Rory gave me the great gift of connecting further with our beautiful heritage and for that I remain forever grateful.
May God's angels and loving arms surround each of you as you carry the torch.
Fondly,

Rory was a very special person in my life. It is hard for me to articulate it properly. I am aching inside like so many other people. The memories I have of him in the 15 years I have known him are precious to me and quite indelible.
I wish and pray for comfort and peace to the extended Miggins family. Rory handled the end of his earthly life with such amazing faith, strength, dignity, and even wit. It was evident at his wake and funeral that there are so many people that feel a unique connection to him. It was a beautiful thing to see...that just doesn't happen everyday. He will never be forgotten.
I Love you so, Rory...

The last best thing that happened to Rory Miggins as he "slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God" was that he was enveloped in the boundless love of a most incredible family. It surely seems ironic that Rory was born on 9-11. This family, which has had so many celebrations of weddings, birthdays, christenings, anniversaries, and countless other joyful events, surely experienced it's own 9-11 with Rory's diagnosis and subsequent battle against the ravages of melanoma. It has been a privilege and an inspiration to see the character, courage, faith and dignity with which this family has faced his illness and their profound grief.

I always felt that Rory was one of the luckiest people on earth because of his big, wonderful, loving, funny, talented family. My deepest condolences for your loss. I know your love for one another will carry you through.
As the priest said today, Rory had a big soul. He had a smile to match. I will miss seeing that smile around town at various music venues, at the greening of the bayou on St. Pat's, and with Anna at the ball games. I will miss hearing his latest ideas about music, the environment, and politics, and I will certainly miss talking baseball with him. Hey, Rory -- anything you can do about the 2008 Astros will be much appreciated! Peace to you, my friend.

To the beautiful Miggins family,
I met a few of you in the past, just here and there around town; the love you have for one another was always apparent in just looking at you!
Anyone who followed the music scene in Houston was guaranteed to run into Rory when they were out and about! Every time I saw him at festivals, concerts, St. Thomas graduation ceremonies, etc., he always took the time to say hello and give me a big, warm hug! It was always great to see him and his captivating smile!
He will surely be missed but I know that he is in a much better place where the music is everlasting! How happy he must be!!
God bless you and keep you safe and may you always be forever close to one another as the extraordinary family you are!!

Dear Miggins Family, I am so sorry for your loss.
Rory was a very special man that I had the pleasure of knowing through the Local Charm, East End, Port of Houston and life. One of my cherished memories of Rory is when 4 generations of my family met up at the Local Charm to hear Pappy Selph play & we all danced the night away. He took a photo of my family that night & later gave it to me as a Christmas present. The framed photo has moved with me from place to place & hangs on the wall in my family room, reminding me of a special night and a very special man.

I remember the many times I went (along with my siblings) down the street to play at the Miggins' house. Rory was always the "older, bigger" kid who was too grown up to spend much time with the "little ones." But times change, and I remember years later meeting him as I walked across the campus at U of H. He called me by name (and didn't confuse me with one of my brothers!), we shook hands, and talked briefly. Suddenly, I wasn't any longer the skinny little squirt from down the street. We were equals. That meant a lot.
I don't think I had seen Rory since then, but I read about his exploits in the paper from time to time, and my mother and sister told me about his illnes and kept me up to date on his condition. Nevertheless, the news of his passing was a shock. The "shadow of St. Anne's" is a little dimmer and a little colder today.
Our condolences and best wishes to Larry and Kathleen and the rest of the family. Hold tightly to one another in your sorrow, and feed on the strength that only a large family can provide. And when you feel like weeping, remember the man and smile instead.
"Happy the man, and happy he alone,
He who can call today his own:
He who, secure within, can say,
Tomorrow do thy worst, for I have lived today."
God bless.

Dear Miggins Family,
Rory came into my life about 3 years ago and he turned out to be one of the biggest blessings I have ever known. It was a very hard time in my life and I was very depressed - to the point where I didn't get out of bed. Rory probably saved my life - really - as he would come over, get me up, fix dinner for me, make me eat, play with my daughter Avery - and of course our dog Sunshine - go to church with me and pray with me. He would take me out and make me laugh again.
He truly was the person that helped me get back on my feet and I know Avery and I will cherish his love and friendship as one of the most special things that ever touched our lives. He was so very unselfish and one of the most giving people on this earth.
I loved his faithfulness to God and his family - and he was a man of very high integrity - one anyone could have the most respect for.
I know we will always miss him, cherish our memories of him and just know - as Avery put it - "God just has a very special job for Rory in Heaven and He needs Rory now - that is why He is taking him "
We all know Rory will have something great awaiting us when we see him again in glorious heaven.
With all of our love Rory -

To Rory's Family and Friends: I had the honor of meeting Rory on several occasions. I met him through my parents and Leon "Pappy" Selph about 1988 during the St. Patrick's Day festivities on the Bayou and many other times at Goode Company Bar-B-Q where Pappy Selph played and at Rory's club in the East End where I grew up. He was a sweet, gracious and honorable man. Houston has lost a great man. May God Bless and keep you all close to him always. You now have another Angel to watch over you.

To the entire Miggins family worldwide, please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of Rory. I knew him and it was true then as now, you were only a stranger once at Local Charm. I just e-mailed a story this morning to a dear friend in Houston about something Rory and I witnessed in the little house behind the club: Jerry Lightfoot, on break and in a moment of frustration, thew a guitar string through a window shattering it to pieces - Rory turned to me and said "how did he do that" and I said, "with a guitar string," rory said: "i know that but how?" We laughed and now he's gone and I didn't know it this morning until a few minutes ago. They're both gone now and they're both laughing I assure you. Rory was and will always be, a great warm hearted human. May he rest in Peace.

I only knew the Miggins family through St. Anne's where my mother taught and I rode with Maureen to school every morning to St. Agnes for a year. The one thing that I was truly impressed was with thier family unity. I could not get over the amount of people and the amount of love felt in that home. Rory's tireless giving to others is attributed to that love and that is what will get you all through this loss. My mother and I will keep you and your families in our prayers.

I've received several emails with the link to this sad news today. Rory was truly one of the people who kept the faith for Texas music in Houston. We mourn his passing; his presence will be missed.
I'll never forget how proud I was to have my first gig at Local Charm in the early 90s. For me, an interloper from Connecticut, it felt like I'd arrived...but Rory himself never played that card. It was always about good music, good company, and good people. Which is how it should be. Rory always got that.
God rest ye, Rory...my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

As my ears were often thirsty for some local music which we enjoyed together my heart is now hungry for his joyous presence. We will carry on our Love for Rory in our hearts and in our actions. WWRD, what would Rory Do?

Rory's departure is truly felt, and he leaves an inspirational legacy. My deepest sympathies to his loving family.
Rory was the "heart and soul" of Local Charm. He was the one who first introduced me to Joe Guitar Hughes at his "magical" establishment, and that was the genesis of my film, "Third Ward Blues."
I will always be grateful to have known Rory. He truly lived life and gave of himself in so many ways. His life was not as long as we would have wanted, however, in the time he had, he gave us alot. Rory understood how important a sense of community is and was always serving to create more community among those he knew.
See you again friend, in that sweet by 'n by.

Dear Miggins Family,
I am so sorry for your loss and will rememer you all in my prayers.
I often think of the fun times at St. Anne's School with Rory, Eileen and my sister Lucy when we were little and at CYO functions in Jr. High.

Rory and I were very dear friends during our late teens and early twenties. He was one of the most extraordinary people I have ever known. His spirit of adventure and love of life captivated me and memories of our times together have been with me for the rest of my life. He introduced me to the various cultures of Houston and the vivid music scene this city had to offer. It was a blessing to have known him. He has touched the lives of many Houstonians and he will be missed greatly. My condolences to his wonderful family.

For all the Miggins family, my most sincere prayers and thoughts are with you during this grieving of the death of your precious Rory.
Rory and I go way back to our earliest days in middle school competing against one another in sports, St. Annes vs. St. Michaels. It was a special time in our lives.
Then we became teammates, classmates and friends for life at St. Thomas High School.
I grew to love his hard-edged ruggedness and kind Irish, Christian spirit. We spent a lot of time together in disciplined structured environments like classrooms and playing fields and just as much time, if not more, enjoying our youthful adventures.
I know that Jesus Christ has a new team captain and we all now have a most loyal advocate in Heaven. What wonders and joy await us all!
Thank you God for Rory Miggins.

Rory Miggins was a true benefactor of the Houston music scene and culture. Personally,I can tell you how I feel about Rory. He was always great to me. A true supporter of my work. He was a great friend to me who I could confide in at any time. His bar Local Charm was home to many musicians. I fondly remember the roast beef sandwiches and carrot cake in a brown lunch sack he always gave to the band members at the end of each gig. I am sad because of the loss of s good freind but I know he had a strong faith - he is for sure in a better place. My thoughts and prayers go out to his immediate family in this time of grieving. Rory Miggins is a huge part of my life and someone I will always love and think of with great memories. Godspeed dude. You are one of a kind.

Before I met Rory, I heard so much about The Local Charm from my sister and brother-in-law, Jerry and Colleen Lightfoot. There is a web of connections that God weaves to bring us, His family, together. The family of God will ALWAYS remain together.

If life is about collecting memories and experiences then this was a life spent to the fullest. You seemed to live every day as if it was your last, always with love and never regret and from this we can all learn a lot.

We have suffered and prayed for
him as we new that he had that awful illness that had no cure.
We know that God is welcoming him.
He can look down on the "Old Sod"
where his folks came from.Know that
there will a "Irish Wake".We have seen the Irish carrying their dead
from to Mass to graveyards.
