Michael Flynn Obituary

MICHAEL STEPHEN FLYNN October 20, 1948 - October 14, 2004 Michael Stephen Flynn joined the angels and saints in heaven on October 14, 2004 after a valiant battle with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Born in Washington D.C. on October 20, 1948, Mike was the son and stepson of Caroline Lucas Senter and Wallace Senter of Tallahassee, Florida. Son of Maurice Francis Flynn of Miami, now deceased, Mike was a talented chef, artist, poet, writer, magician, fisherman, and salesman but his real gift in life was loving. For Mike that was only achieved through service to others. He had a passionate love of music, a wild and whimsical sense of humor, and a love for the celebration of carnival. He served his country honorably during the Vietnam War and was a graduate of the University of New Orleans where he met his beloved wife, Debra Steer Flynn. They shared an extraordinary love affair as friends, lovers and soulmates. Mike was the father of two smart, funny and tender-hearted beauties, both of whom learned from him that our purpose in life is to serve. Diana Marie Flynn and Camille Erin Flynn adored their father. Mike will be greatly missed by his sister, Maureen Flynn Adler, of Silver Spring, Maryland, and his brother, Wallace Senter, Jr. of Atlanta. Mike was a devoted Catholic who was proud of his Irish heritage. He lived one day at a time with the help of the fellowship of the men and women of Alcoholics Anonymous. He held close to his heart The Last Chance Recovery Center and sat on its board of directors. It would be impossible to name all the men and women who loved Mike and whom Mike loved and influenced. Cancer only brought out the best in Mike. As his disease progressed, his heart expanded. His last arena to spread his special brand of humor and exuberance for life was MD Anderson Cancer Center. As they worked tirelessly to help him, he ended up helping them, too. When asked what his first question for God will be, he replied, "Why was I so lucky?" Darling, we were the lucky ones to have known you. Godspeed. Please join us in celebrating the life and resurrection of Michael Stephen Flynn, at Brookside Funeral Home, Champions, Sunday, October 17, 2004, 5-7 p.m. Vigil Service 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 7810 Cypresswood Dr., Spring, Texas, Monday, October 18 , 11:00 a.m. Interment at Houston National Veterans Cemetery. Dear Debbie and family I am just seeing this. It is the year 2020. I remember Mike and all the fun we had in New Orleans in our 20s. I remember crabbing with y’all on the lake front in New Orleans and Mardi Gras. I hope you are all doing well these days. . Mel Lorio

I knew Mike for fifteen years and he was one of my greatest friends. I truly remember the times I was invited to come over to dinner with the family, I was always welcomed. I was a pall bearer for his dad, Maurice, also a great friend of mine. I will be missed by all. Thanks for everything Mike.

Mike was the reason I selected the Klienwood group as my recovery home group. I wanted the peace he had. His care and compasion, and sincere interest in my life was simply magnetic. We shared many similar memories of New Orleans, Carnival and Jazz Fest. He was a wonderful mentor, friend, and fellow man. I have been truly blessed to have Mike in my life. Thank you, Mike. I love you.

Michael will live on forever in our hearts. Even when his own problems far outweighed ours, his focus remained on helping us (and others). He was the "real deal" and a true inspiration!
