How it pains me that my good ol' cousin went to God in such a very bizarre way. But I'll always remember him as a kind and sweet soul, with a marvelous sense of humor. A man who took me and my brother and sister into his home one summer... when our parents were unable to care for us... and gave us the gift of love. It was a memorable, supportive and uplifting experience. And it somehow now pains me that I never properly thanked him, and Ann, for their generosity, caring and love. It was very, very special. Not many in this world would take in a trio of disconnected kids; unsure of why we were there; and still make it seem to us like it was a vacation. Like we were just supposed to be there... like we were invited and most welcome. And I know now that he was our saviour at the moment. There was nowhere for us to go. And Maurie and Ann took us in as though we were their very own.
That is what I'll always remember. That I had a marvelous vacation at the lake... living with, and learning from my cousin, unaware that there was anything amiss in my life. What a really cool, nice guy. And over the years he never ceased to amaze and amuse me. I'm just sorry that perhaps he never knew that he was so loved and admired by me. Oh, sure, when we were together, I was always beaming and alert when I was with him... it was like he was giving me a joking and knowing wink every moment. And I'm sure that I winked back, and smiled a great big smile. But the actual affection, the very warm wonderful way he made me feel, was probably never truly and consciously expressed. To me, anyway, he was the greatest... a true product of his marvelous parents... a living testament to their love, caring and teaching. He was obviously the perfect student. He was still yet another of their perfect creations. How lucky I am to have known him ... to have been in his care... to have been his friend. How good I feel to know that he's now in the embrace of God... safe, happy, and entirely immersed in the love eternal. It's his due... and very justly so.
