Victor Winter Obituary

Victor John Winter, age 53, of Warrensburg, Mo., passed away Sunday, January 28, 2007, at his home. He was born on June 11, 1953, in Columbus, Kan., the son of Jack and Maryann Winter. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Winter; daughter Shadow; stepdaughters Aerica and Elizabeth of Warrensburg, and brothers Mark Winter and Dan Winter of Columbus, Kan. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007, at the Sweeney-Phillips in Warrensburg, Mo., (660) 747-9114. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations may be made to the StarGarden Foundation. He enjoyed a long and decorated career as a newspaper photographer and photo editor with the Kansas City Star. Winning a William Randolph Hearst Journalism award for photojournalism in 1977, the 1981 National Press Photographer's Association Region 7 Photographer of the Year award. He was the founder of StarGarden Foundation, an organization dedicated to astronomical outreach. His passion for astronomy brought him to all corners of the globe to photograph the sky. He brought both of those passions to Bolivia, leading the Southern Skies Star Party at Lake Titicaca, where he was "El Padron" or godfather, organizing donations for the local school and community. In 2005, minor planet 37601 Vicjen was named after him to honor his efforts there. Locally, Vic dedicated, built and operated the public Charles Douglas Memorial Observatory at his ranch in Warrensburg, which provides monthly outreach programs to the community. He was an owner of ICSTARS Astronomy, www.icstars.com, Astronomical Tours and DayStar Filters. He was a JPL Nasa Solar System Ambassador, and editor of the Astronomical League Reflector Magazine. Vic was a decorated member of and former president of the Astronomical Society of Kansas City. Vic received numerous outreach and observational awards, most recently the Astronomical League's Master Observer award. He was passionate about solar astronomy, leading total solar eclipses expeditions on every continent. Vic has given thousands of public talks and demonstrations on astronomy through the ASKC and StarGarden Foundation.

Not sure what to say?

September 30, 2008

It is September 30, 2008 but I just learned of Vic's passing. Vic and his family were wonderful neighbors to my parents, Chuck and Jackie Douglas, in Roeland Park, KS. I knew Vic to be a best buddy for my Dad in the Sky parties for children, building the site for this learning center and above all, a generous friend who my parents spoke of often and with joy. I hope he and my parents have connected again for their love of astronomy must continue only now they can see the galaxies from their heavenly perch. God bless Vic and his family. Love and appreciation, Carol Douglas

I just read about Vic's death today as we search for 2009 Solar Eclipse tours. I remember the day Vic carried Shadow up the volcano during our 2005 Solar Eclipse tour. The world is a better place for having him here such a short time.

There are entirely too many "Vic stories" for such limited space. I've known him for many years, but founded a very close relationship with him through the ASKC and the old "K.A.O.S." group - in fact, I bought his observing deck from him at K.A.O.S. for $800 when he wanted to build a new one.

I guess the single story that stands out most in my mind is the night up at K.A.O.S. that, at about 4 a.m. when everybody else was in bed, Vic, Bob Haller and myself were just sitting outside talking - well, Bob and I were standing; Vic was sitting on top of the 10-foot ladder I used for my 25" scope. All of a sudden, Vic said "I see Omega! I'm sure of it - hand me some binoculars!"

Haller and I were sure he had become star-dazzled, but to humor the poor guy we handed up a pair of 11 X 80 binocs, and Vic went nuts!
After Haller and I had climbed the ladder in turn, we had to agree - there, barely over the horizon on a clear, cold night, hung Omega Centauri! It could not have been seen unless you were in exactly the right place at exactly the right time - and you couldn't see it from the ground, the ladder made you just high enough to see it!

As always, of course, Vic was at the right place, at the right time, and on top of the ladder, close to the stars that he loved so well.

What a hell of a view he must be getting of Omega now!

I have some very early memories of Vic, having grown up with him in Columbus. When we were kids, he was an explorer. The fields, the ponds, the woods near his rural home. I'm not surprised he was explorer of the stars. I only saw Vic a few times after high school, he was always a kind and gentle person, that is how I remember him. I'm sorry I did not know him better as an adult.

Vic has joined the stars, as a new bright light. In the mean time, we are kept in the darkness. May his energy still inspire as many individuals as he did during his life on earth. The mexicans that joined him in Luxor for the 2004 sun transit of Venus and the 2006 total eclipse of the sun in the Aegean sea will not forget him, with deep gratitude.

I just heard and I can hardly believe it. I was so impressed by Vic and in awe of his energy. I would have liked to travel with him again.

To the family of Vic Winter:
I am so sorry for your loss. May the stars at night console you and the sun in the day bring you hope. Happy Birthday, Vic

Melissa Kirk

May 9, 2007

I will not forget the night of April 26, 1997, when Comet Hale-Bopp was a bright, snowy ice ball in the constellation Perseus. I had my camera on a tripod, with Vic's 12 inch telescope at the bottom of the field of view. He and I saw the comet with all the same glory and splendor.

I watched the November 1999 transit of Mercury across the Sun. Vic photographed this event in hydrogen alpha light. Vic touched many lives with his passion for astrophotography.

To John Winter's family, friends and colleagues we mourn with you! He was a sweet guy who even answered an e-mail I sent him; very 'personable' and likeable! We will miss him terribly.

I'm a Meteorologist and I was shocked. I remember seeing John at an American Meteoroligical Socienty event a couple of years ago at Channel 10. Nice guy you would ever want to meet. John was a great communicator as he gave us the weather. When John was on in the mornings he always had that calming voice which helped make the day go smoother. I remember the Oprah segment as he was one of the nation's most eligible bachelors. What a shock and sadness.

AIRIANNA HUHN

April 6, 2007

We watched John every morning-he made us smile even when it rained.
Now in spite of what has happened-his memory will forever remain.
Such a likeable person-with such a handsome face
You are no longer with us
but no one will ever take your place.
Now you are at peace in a much better place
Though this is hard to understand
God bless you-Victor John Winter
You were a wonderful man!

This is so tragic. I really enjoyed knowing Vic on our trips to Bolivia and afterwards. This is such sad news.

March 18, 2007

I will always remember his shy smiles, his quiet patience. And was he aware of how much a mentor he was to folk like me... just by watching his quiet, non-invasive set up of a shot.. getting just the right angle... just the right image... just the right "feel"?
I will miss him.
My deepest sympathy goes to Jen, Aerica, Libby, Shadow and the rest of the family.

March 12, 2007

We first met Vic & Jen in Bolivia in 94 and subsequently at Astrofest Star parties in the Midwest USA. We traveled to Egypt in '06 for the eclipse on one of their tours. At Astrofest Vic looked very tired, the trials of the '06 eclipse tours seemed to take a lot out of him. We didn't know until yesterday 03/11/07 of his passing. There is a deep sadness in our hearts.

Bill Bogardus

March 11, 2007

I had the pleasure of meeting Vic at the ALCON convention in Arlington Texas last summer and found him to be a good person and dedicated amateur astronomer. His passing was a shock to me and my sincerest sympathy goes out to him and his family.

Mark Alsip

March 7, 2007

I came to Vic and Jen's web site for inspiration, as I often do, and found this terrible news instead. Not long ago I was sharing a beer with Vic in Niger admiring his patience and deep sense of humor as he explained all the things that can and do go wrong on solar eclipse expeditions. Several days later he was still smiling as he trudged into camp 12 hours late after his vehicle died in the Sahara. Nothing seemed to faze him. I'm not sure even death can. But I am terribly sorry that such a great person is gone.

I visited the star ranch several times and very much enjoyed Vic's knowledge and passion for the heavens. Thanks Vic, you will be missed.

February 27, 2007

I had the good fortune of meeting Vic at the ALCON convention in Arlington, TX. this past summer. His enthusiasm for amateur astronomy was truly infective. We both shared our NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassadors experiences. I felt that I'd just made a new friend. He will be missed!

February 20, 2007

In journalism school, we're taught to not use the adjective "unique" lightly. Vic was unique. Gifted to the point of other-wordly, how perfect that a career that began in the converted bathroom-to-darkroom of his home in Columbus as he explored basic photography should culminate in exploration of the universe. His life meant a lot to me. I missed him and now I miss him.

Committed and passionate, yet still easygoing and personable. Think of how how many people will always associate Vic with their lives' most fantastic adventures. Sad as his loss is, it stirs up many fond memories for all of us. Vic will not soon be forgotten.

Vic's was a life well-lived. Unassuming and easy going, that guy got around. And looking at his travel photos, he wasn't limited to just this galaxy. Hard to believe he's gone, guess he really isn't--just part of the star dust continuum. My heart goes out to Jen and the girls. He will be missed!

I was very dismayed to learn of Vic's passing. I only met him once, but some years later in 2005 he generously responded to my request by contributing three of his photographs to my book on the Sun. He also let me use two of these for an educational poster for NASA. He exuded passion and enthusiasm -- what a great model for others. My send my condolences.

So sad.

Vic and Jen worked so hard to put together an eclipse adventure to a remote region of Northern Africa. All for the adventure of astronomy. The astronomical community owes him much for what he's accomplished.

February 10, 2007

Missing you, Vic. God bless. Will always remember the eclipse trip to Bilma.

February 9, 2007

I met Vic twice. Once when he presented to photography students at CMSU (now UCM) and again when the students were invited to his ranch for some astrophotography. This was a few years ago, but I'll never forget it. It ended up raining, so we didnt get to photograph the stars, but he was such a captivating man that we still had fun and learned a lot. I always intended to go back to the ranch on a clear night, and unfortunately I never did. But because of him, I have a love of watching and photographing the night skies.
Thank you, Vic. And God bless you and your family.

I never met Vic Winter in person, but talked to him over the phone twice. He seemed very pleasant. Our first conversation was very brief. But on our second conversation, I told him that I was very impressed with his astrophotography, especially with his photos of the November 2003 Total Solar Eclipse in Antarctica! Finally, I had the pleasure of travelling with Astronomical Tours to Egypt for the March 2006 Total Solar Eclipse! I had a wonderful vacation in Egypt as well! Yes, we will all miss Vic. But now he's that much closer to the stars.

Jim and Kathy Hackett

February 8, 2007

Kathy and I were greatly sadded when hearing of Vic's death. He was very vigorous and hearty on the Niger expedition. Our condolences go out to Jen, and the family for this untimely passing of a very fine man. He will be sorely missed. Our prayers are with you.

February 8, 2007

Vic, your kindness will always be remembered. My family and I met you on the flight to Alice Springs, Australia for the 2001 Leonids. You graciously allowed us to observe with your group at Ayers Rock. You made that experience one of the highlights of my life. Our thoughts go out to you and your family as you take your place among the stars.

Maryann Ott

February 7, 2007

You were a very special man, Vic and cared for by many people. Like a shooting star, it seemed like I blinked and now you are gone. Much, much too soon. Be at peace, in your place among the stars, as this is your true home. I will remember you a long time.

Vic and I were born on the same day and we had some of our early birthday parties together (although I think he always got more for his birthday than I did - ha!). I spent a lot of time out at his house in scouts and in other activities when we were young. He was a good and decent guy and a lot of fun. I wished I could have known him when we were grown.

Vic was a unique individual; passionate, creative and dedicated. His outreach to children was extrodinary. Vic seemed to understand the unity between all of us who share this planet and strive toward peace. The heaven and its bounty of stars and wonder were offered to others, as gifts from Vic's heart and soul. Those who knew Vic will think of him each time we look up at the vast evening sky. Our sympathy to Jen, Aerika, Libby and Shadow. All our love.

Jen Winter

February 6, 2007

I met Vic when I was working at the Kansas City Star. I worked in the Engraving department and would occasionally see him out on the smoking deck, perched atop the ladder which accessed the roof. One night on the 4th of July, I was stuck working night shift. I was disappointed that I couldn't be out with my family, watching fireworks and had heard a rumor that we could get to the roof somehow and watch from there. So during my break, I scoured the halls and departments looking for someone who would know how to reach the roof. I poked my head into the photo scanning department and found him there. "You!" "You know how to get to the roof where there's a good view of the sky, don't you?"
"You bet!" he said. "Let's go." So surrounded by millions of downtown city lights, we climbed to the roof of the building and watched fireworks in all directions. Later, we would watch the sky together on nearly every continent. Not all because he made it to Australia without me...
I'm sure the view's much better up there. No clouds, eh? I bet the seeing is perfect!

I had the pleasure to meet Vic, Jen, Aerica and Libby when I traveled with them to Africa in 2002. I also spent a little bit of time observing with Vic at the Okie-Tex Star Party in 2004. Vic will be sorely missed. His enthusiasm for sharing his love and knowledge of the sky with others was obvious to all who met him. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

February 5, 2007

It has been years since I last saw Vic, but he was not someone you'd forget. I always hoped I'd run into him when back in the Kansas City area. He was taken much too young.

February 5, 2007

Vic’s passion for astronomy was immediately noticeable when you met him and always evident in his voice.

I will sincerely miss his enthusiasm for the sun and all of astronomy.

Vic honored us by being Best Man at our wedding. A childhood friend of David's, Vic was a compassionate, creative and gifted person. The contributions he has made to astronomy, photography and society are noteworthy and make all who knew him proud of his accomplishments. We were fortunate to have Vic host a group of Kathy's students in the early 1990s to "tour the heavens" at the observatory in Louisburg. His impact will continue to light the way for others. Ad Astra Per Aspera. We miss you.

Having known Vic since grade school, his loss is very hard. My thoughts and prayers are with all his family left behind. Now you dance among those stars you could only view through a telescope lens. Enjoy, my dear friend. I will never look at another night sky without seeing your face on each star.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

Ginger Mayfield

February 4, 2007

I first met Vic and Jen at the Great Plains star party and then again at Okie-Tex. There are some people you just click with and Vic was one of those people. We had fun setting up our solar equipment inside at Okie-Tex due to the weather and Vic gave an enthusiatic solar talk to the folks who were gathered. We exchanged emails and he was so excited about being a new dad. I regret that I never got to go on any of the astro trips due to work.

We all only have a short time on this planet and Vic certainly made the most of his time here with us. We should all do as well. He will be greatly missed.

Jay Lacy

February 3, 2007

Our sympathies. We have known Vic and his family for over 40 years. As a college student he painted our two story house. We watched him practice his golf game as a high school student. Although we haven't had contact for several years we still have fond memories.

R. Christian Bruggeman

February 3, 2007

From all of us in the Oklahoma City Astronomy Club we send prayers and comfort to the family. The gang will miss Vic dearly and Okie-Tex will not be the same. God's speed Vic.

February 3, 2007

I am very sorry to hear this news. Vic was a great guy and a very good friend to many in the astronomy community.

I will never forget the night 300 kids visited us at our observing site in Bolivia.

Vic and Jen had been supporting the impoverished local school by donations of used computers. They said it would be ok if a few kids stopped by to observe with us that evening.

The rumor mill at the school and in local community transformed this into

" NASA scientists are studying the universe right here on shores of Lake Titicaca"

Four Bus loads of kids and camera crew from CNN in La Paz decended on us shortly after sunset.

Somehow we could not convice them they we were not from NASA.

I will alway remember times like this with Vic.

My heart goes out to Jen and the Kids

Eric Roel

February 3, 2007

Lived with him and Jen and their 2 big girls, an adventure that my wife and I will never forget, the Venus transit in Luxor, Egypt. I will miss his enthusiasm on this kind of adventures and also the solar chats we always had when we met at RTMC, NEAF, or at any other astronomical convention.
My respects to Jen and girls.

Rick Rodgers

February 3, 2007

I met Vic all too short a time ago, in 2004, when I first travelled with Astronomical Tours to Egypt to see the Venus Transit. His enthusiasm for Astronomy was infectious, and his description of Bolivian skies was instrumental in convincing me to go to the Southern Skies Star Party. His wonder at the skies was matched only by his enthusiasm for spreading that wonder. He lived the words of Vincent Van Gogh, "...the sight of the stars makes me dream!"

Richard Apple

February 3, 2007

Vic was one of the most selfless people I have ever known. He was always thinking about ways to improve everyone's understanding of the cosmos. His passion for solar observing was contagious and easily passed on to me. I will never be able look at the sun again without thinking of Vic. His generosity, kindness and willingness to share everything he had and everything he knew will be missed.

Debi Wadel

February 3, 2007

I only met Vic one time. It was at my very first Star Party. I will never forget looking through his telescope at the sun, my first views of our star. WOW! Recently I have enjoyed his wonderful photos on icstars.com. My heart goes out to his family and friends. May the Lord bless you and put His loving arms around you during this difficult time in your lives.

Vic was the first member of the Astronomical Society of Kansas City that I met. I remember that first night with Vic. He was open and warm and friendly. Vic accomplishments as an amateur astronomer are well known but his accomplishments as a man shine even brighter. Keep exploring Vic.

Vic and I have known each other for over 25 years. We traveled the country in search of dark skies and spent 1000's of hours searching the secrets of the night sky. I will miss Vic because we both saw the humor in everything and God's splender in the heavens above.

I met Vic in 1995 at the Winter Star Party where he had fashioned an
early H-alpha telescope of his own design with a video camera attached. Vic shared everything he knew with anyone interested, and we always talked about instrument improvements. I will always remember how well he greated an acquaintance even after years of
absence. I had not seen him in years but he would be the first person I'd look up at the Winter Star Party. Sadly, I will miss him.
