Betty Allen Obituary

Betty Allen was born Betty Jean Gottlieb July 1st, 1920, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Louis and Grace (Mankuss) Gottlieb. She grew up within a tightly-knit Jewish community, losing her mother at age eight. Her father, a merchant, raised her and her sister Maxine, and at age 16 she entered Whitman College. It was there she met her husband, Stewart ("Stew") Allen of Grangeville, Idaho. The two wed and left college in June of 1940.
Betty and Stew started an ice-cream shop and locker plant in Rigby, Idaho, a venture that ended with Stew's World War II service. Theresa Allen was born in Idaho Falls. After the war, the new family moved to Ellensburg where they started "Allen's IceCream," Ellensburg's first in-and-out, roller skate, curb-service business and a favorite "hang-out" for CWCE and EHS students and local families. She made and sold her popular candies here and at their downtown restaurants, Carlyle's Lunch and the Snack Shop and Webster's Café. Michael Allen was born in Ellensburg.
During their first two decades in Ellensburg, Betty worked along-side her husband in their restaurant and retail clothing businesses. She also ran her own ballroom dance business after graduating from the Arthur Murray School of Dance. At age 50, after earning her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Central Washington State College ('68, '70), she was hired by Cle Elum High School to teach physical education, English poetry and literature, drama, and journalism. She was well-known for her creation of the P.E. Demonstration ---an annual community event featuring skills of all of the students of Cle Elum High School. She retired after 13 years of service.
Betty was a warm, energetic, and sociable person who pursued a variety of interests throughout her life. She was an avid reader, poetry lover, library board member, proponent of progressive causes, bridge player (she earned the rank of Life and Bronze Master and served the Boards of both the Ellensburg and Yakima Duplicate Bridge Clubs), Cub Scout Den Mother, post-card collector (a founding member of the Seattle Antique Post Card Collector's Club), gardener, cook and hostess, nature-lover, and long-term member and/or officer of Altrusa, Kittitas County School Retirees, Weight Watchers, and Friday Clubs; in the latter she helped facilitate the "Downtown Clock" and refurbishment of the original exterior wall advertisements.
Betty was a friend to all cats and dogs. She was active in the lives of her children and their families. And she was the devoted care-taker of Stew, who died of Alzheimer's disease in 1992. Throughout her life she kept her Jewish faith.
Betty lived the last twenty years of her life surrounded by friends and family who loved her vivacious personality, bold spirit, and commitment to social justice. She lived a long and fruitful life, and at age 90 succumbed to heart failure after a brief period of illness.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart, and her sister, Maxine Carlisle. She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Roberts (Jack) and son, Michael Allen; five grandchildren--- Debra (Doug), Deann (Jochen), Jim, Davy, and Caroline; five great-grandchildren--- Cameron (Kylee), Colton, Austin, Justine, and Laurel; one great-great-grandson--- Cohen; and all her Carlisle relatives.
A memorial service and potluck to honor Betty Allen will be held at the Hal Holmes Center of the Ellensburg Public Library at noon on Saturday, April 16th. Cards may be mailed c/o Mike Allen, Box # 116, 110 W. 6th, Ellensburg 98926. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Ellensburg Public Library Trust.

Thanks so much to all of you who have signed ino this guest book with a memory of our mom Betty Allen. I would especially like to express my thanks for the hundreds of hours my sister Theresa has devoted to mom during her last few years of life. Theresa was ever-attentive to mom's medical needs and was mom's advocate. She and husband Jack took mom to the Ocean each of the past five years; mom loved to watch the Ocean waves roll in!

Hard to believe Ellensburg will be the same without Betty Allen. Betty has been my mentor, advisor and biggest fan for over 4 decades and I will miss her daily. We shared a furious love of books and I loved to share books with Betty because nothing shocked her! When my son Logan was deployed, Betty always understood the fear in a mother's heart for a son sent to war. She and Stew have touched us all with their sense of fun and deep loyalty to one another. Thanks for sharing life's ups and downs with me, Betty. Life won't be quite so funny from here on out.

We are so sorry to hear of Betty's passing. Norton and both loved Betty and Stu. There was always a great greeting every time we saw them.
We have been away from E'burg now for over nine years and so many of the older generation are gone.
It is sad to think that all the great information and stories in their memories are gone forever.
You guys keep smiling,Betty would not want you to be sad... She is back together with her beloved Stu.

What a great tribute to your Mom. Not only did it seem your parents were everywhere and doing everything they WERE everywhere and were doing everything. I had a flood of memories attached to several activities you mentioned. Neat lady.

Mrs. Allen sparked a love for writing in many of her students. I was one of them. She has, in spirit, been at my side as I wrote many a paper and countless articles. She speaks through me as I instruct my own students as they write their papers.

God bless you, Mrs. Allen. Thank you for all you gave in your life.

Mrs. Allen was a wonderful and caring person/teacher. I will always remember the fun we had getting ready for the P.E. Demonstration. That is one of the best memories I have from school. She will be missed.

Betty Allen was also my English teacher from 77-80 at Cle Elum High. I, as well, did not realize she had only taught for 11 years. What a great life she had. 20 years after graduation, I was in a shop in Ellensburg, and there she was. She recognized me right away and we had a great chat! Condolences to the family.

Mrs. Allen was a sweet, bubbly, passionate teacher. I had her as an English teacher, poetry, and class advisor. (1977-80). Until I read her obituary, I had no idea she had been fairly new to the teaching world...she taught like a veteran! I appreciate this even more, as I've become a teacher, myself. My condolences to the family of this wonderful lady.

Mike,
Wonderful people your Mom and Dad. I was in Betty's dance class in college. I was 6'2 with two left feet. She would call on me as her partner to demonstrate a dance move to the class. What a kick! She knew how to motivate us kids. Her energy and enthusiasm was contageous! Same goes for Stu and his helping with the cattle drives, if he was there you knew there was going to be laughter.
What a pair! My thought and prayers for you.

Betty and I served together on the library board for many years. She valued learning, literacy and civility and defended them vigorously when defense was needed. She was likable and warm as well. Her death is a loss to the community and to the many people who had the good fortune to know her.
