Melvin Daskal Obituary

DASKAL, Melvin Harris Born in Chicago, IL and died Oct. 16, 2008 at age 84. Mel received a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago in 1947 and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1950, when he promptly founded his own CPA firm that continues to this day. He served overseas in the 12th Armored Division, Armored Infantry, during World War II; and received a Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. Mel lived first in Chicago and then in Glencoe, IL until 1967 when he moved to sunny California. He was the son of Rabbi Benjamin Daskal (Tillie), reportedly the first native-born Rabbi in Chicago.
For over 35 years he wrote the monthly "Financial Fax" articles, which had a national circulation, as well as hundreds of other articles about taxes and money, which appeared in various trade and other publications. He also authored the nationally published 430-page book "The Sales Representatives' Business and Tax Handbook." He was a speaker of note throughout his career and often addressed various business groups all over the country. Mel is survived by his loving wife Carol (Moore) of 20 years; four children, Teryl (David), Todd (Dee Dee), Denna and Dean; dear stepchildren, Julie and Michael (Rhonda) and six grandchildren, Zachary, Rachel, Noah, Benjamin, Alex and Matthew. Sadly, his "kid sister" Judy and older brother Marvin both predeceased him. Mel was a very special person and touched the lives of many. He had a wicked and unforgettable sense of humor that he used along with his very high intellect in almost every situation; and he aided in the success of literally hundreds of small businesses throughout his life. He was generous, extravagant and kind to a fault, and was a truly unique gentleman. Memorial Service: Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008 at Hillside Memorial Park at 3:00 p.m., (800) 576-1994. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Associates - IMC of the Los Angeles Jewish Home for the Aging at 7150 Tampa Avenue, Reseda, CA 91335.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I am sorry to have never met Mel but he certainly lived a full and honorable life.
My grandparents, Celia Goldstein and Maurice Eisenberg, were the first couple Mel's father, Rabbi Benjamin Daskal, married after his arrival at Rodfei Zedek. The date was 9/9/19 and their Ketuba is pictured in the book "Rodfei Zedek - The First Hundred Years".
