Daniel Maloney Obituary

Daniel Hayes Maloney October 5, 1963- March 30, 2006 COLUMBUS, GA— 1SG Daniel Hayes Maloney, age 42, resident of Columbus, died on Thursday, March 30, 2006, in Columbus, GA. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, on Monday, April 3, 2006, at 5:00 p.m. 1SG Maloney enlisted in the United States Army on 30 August 1986, and has 20 years of service. 1SG Maloney's assignments have been with units in Fort Benning, GA, Fort Campbell, KY, Fort Drum, NY, and Alaska. He has served at every level of the Infantry from rifleman to company first sergeant. He fought in Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF 1) for his country, deployed seven times, and has represented the best the nation has to offer on four continents. His service to the Army has been exemplary. 1SG Maloney has successfully completed almost every school the Army has to offer: Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger, Pathfinder, Jungle Warfare, Three Foreign Jump Wings, PLDC, BNCOC (APFT and Commandant's Award), ANCOC (APFT, Commandant's and Leadership Award), and he has earned the Expert Infantryman's Badge as well as the Combat Infantryman's Badge (2nd Award). He has been awarded two Meritorious Service Medals and the Bronze Star. He has marked himself as one of the top performers in the Army. His culminating achievement was standing up and leading a one station unit training company at Fort Benning. He simultaneously assembled a team of drill sergeants and support cadre, supervised the construction of new barracks and began training the first of four back-to-back cycles of 220 trainees. 1SG Daniel Maloney is one of the best soldiers ever to have served his nation. His steadfast dedication, unquestioned competence, superb physical fitness, strength of character and positive leadership are rarely seen combined in one personality. 1SG Maloney was born in New York, was Catholic in faith, and a member of Saint Brendan's Parish, Bellingham, MA. Dan was a passionate and loving person who never met a stranger. He never said no, can't or won't to anyone in need, donating his time willingly to benefits and foundations, especially those involving children. His other loves were golf and riding motorcyles. He was beloved by his father, wife, children, extended family and many friends. Dan will be sorely missed by all. Dan was married to the former Melissa Foy-Maloney of Columbus, GA, and they have four children: Amber 13, Autumn 12, Shelby 15, and son Miles 11 years old. Dan is survived by his father Daniel J. Maloney, who is married to Sharon Maloney, and was preceded in death by his mother Jane A. Maloney. He has three sisters, Kathleen Marques, Karen Power, Kim Saunders and uncles, aunts, many nieces, nephews, and many friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to USO World Headquarters, Department WS, P. O. Box 96860, Washington, DC 20090-6860, 1-800-876-7469. To Daniels Family,

I served with 1SG Maloney in Fort Campbell, Ky., and OIF 1, He was my Platoon Sergeant, an outstanding leader, I looked up to him in many ways. He inspired me to go and get my Ranger tab. I am what I am today because of his fine leadership and examples.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

Dear Family of Dan,

Even though we never were privileged to meet him we spoke with him many times on the phone while he was stationed at Ft. Campbell. He was a good friend of our son Dan. We will always remember his friendliness and sense of humor. Our hearts go out to you at this very sad time. God love you all.
