Bobby Watson Obituary

Bobby Watson Sr. March 12, 1946- October 19, 2007 PHENIX CITY, AL— Bobby Watson Sr. was fatally injured in a traffic accident in Phenix City, Alabama Friday, October 19, 2007. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday October 24, 2007 at Morningside Baptist Church in Columbus, Ga with Reverend Bill Shorey officiating. A private interment will follow the service. The family will receive friends after the service in the church. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5-7 PM at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus. Mr. Watson was born in Henry County, Alabama to Agnes and F.L. Watson and was just recently preceded in death by his loving parents. Survivors include his brother, Joe Morgan (Loette) of Abbeville, Alabama; a devoted wife of 42 years, Joann Sauls Watson; and four children, Wendy Johnson (Greg) of Ocala, Florida, Bobby Watson, Jr. (Maria) of Upatoi, Georgia, Robbie Watson (Michael Rollier) of Columbus and Josh Watson of Smiths Station, Alabama; eight grandchildren, Bailey, Justin, Jacob, Jennifer, Summer, Olivia, Jon Michael, and Ross Tillman. Bobby began working for the original Alabama Kraft Company in 1966 in Cottonton, Alabama and later served several years as Union President for Mead Coated Board. Bobby was quite a character and after 41 years with the company he had the uncanny ability to host a cook-out, catch a nap or transform a mixer into a hot tub in a single 12 hour shift. MeadWestvaco will never know another worker like Bobby Watson. Dad taught us a great work ethic but above all he led by example teaching his children to value our fellow man based on character alone, never judging a person's social or economic status. He genuinely loved people from all walks of life and they loved him. Bobby was a big fan of the great outdoors and his own special sanctuary, otherwise known as Pebble Cove, Lake Eufaula. Special thanks to the Lord's angel, Elder Victor Smith of Covington, Ga who stopped at the scene of the accident to comfort my dad and pray with him as he ascended to heaven. We know you are reunited with Grandma and Granddaddy but our hearts are broken back here on earth. Thanks for a lifetime of laughs and memories Dad; we'll never, ever be the same without you. Contributions may be made to Columbus Baptist Association, 3598 Buena Vista Rd., Columbus, GA 31906. Those who wish may sign the online guest registry at www.mcmullenfuneralhome.com.

Joann and Bobby, Jr. I know this has been such a shock to us all. Bobby was definitely one of a kind. He truly had people's best interest in mind and that's what made it so easy for me to work with him for 8 years while in HR at the Mill. I will never forget him and the things he did for people. My favorite memory was after the 2001 negotiations were over he dumped all the files in his front seat to the back and drove me around Hwy 165 to take all the signs down. He covered them up in the back of his truck because he didn't want anyone to know. I hope people will always remember the example he set which was always to do the right thing for people. He was just months away from retirement. Bobby Jr. I'm so glad you were able to make him so proud having no idea that his time was so short. You'll be able to carry that with you. I wish I could be with the Mahrt crew today to grieve. But I am grieving and praying for you too.

I worked with Bobby while he served the Paper Mill employees as Union President. Not only was he as colorful as the obituary suggests; but he was also a man of true integrity. Bobby represented the employees well.

Bobby, Jr., my prayers are with you and your family. Your father will be missed. I will always remember the great lengths he went through to ensure that Mr. Bobby Stewart's arrangements were taken care of after he passed away. This told me more about the character of your father than I would have ever learned just by working with him. God bless you and your family.
