3/15/1933 – 3/17/2011
Calvin Herbert Bryant was born in Birmingham, Alabama to Christine Bryant, a single mother on March, 15, 1933. He moved to Youngstown, Ohio at an early age. His mother, Christine married Jesse C. Douglass and shortly afterwards, Jesse adopted Calvin and his name officially changed to Calvin Herbert Douglass.
Calvin attended Rayen High School where he was a highly praised student and athlete. He played the center position for their championship basketball team. He was also involved in Track and Field. Calvin attended Kent State University and served in the Armed Forces designated to the Emergency Reinforcement unit.
High school was where he met the love of his life, Geraldine (Gerri) Buggs. Calvin married his high school sweetheart, Gerri and with this union came 3 daughters, Carol Ann, Christine and Denise (who has already proceeding him in death).
Calvin, a devoted father and husband, worked many jobs, enabling him and his family to move to various locations around the United States. While residing in Youngstown, Ohio, he worked as a waiter for Youngstown Country Club and then a salesman for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. This position eventually enabled him and his family to relocate to Shaker Heights, Ohio. In 1978, Calvin obtained a sales manager position with Smith Pipe and Supply and moved his family to Bakersfield, California. At the age of 52, Calvin relocated to Tomball, Texas, where he and his family currently reside. Due to an economical downturn in the Houston area, Calvin was forced to take a sales position in California. For nine years, Calvin relentlessly sacrificed to sustain his household obligations in Texas. Finally Calvin landed a sales position with HAZMATPAC in Houston, Texas…where he later retired.
Some of Calvin’s other lifetime accomplishments included social chairmen for the Youngstown Jaycees; President of the Council for Communication Problems; Volunteer coach for Jesse Owens Track and Field youth events.
Calvin was highly loved and respected by everyone he came in contact with. He enjoyed sports, good food, working in the yard, restoring antique furniture and most of all - spending time with family. Calvin was a great husband, provider and all-around family man. He went beyond the call of duty when it came to being a grandfather; He was very supportive of his grandchildren as they participated in sports, such as soccer and basketball. As a responsible, compassionate son, he took care of both his mother and father prior to their passing.
Calvin departed this world on March 17, 2011, two days after his 78th birthday. He leaves behind his loving wife, Geraldine, his 2 daughters, Carol Ann Henderson and Christine Smith; three grandchildren, Jamila Carr, Portia Barker, and Bryant Douglass; and two great grandchildren, Noah Carr and Aurelia Carr. Calvin Douglass you will truly be missed.
