Kevin White Obituary

Kevin Hagan White, a political figure who helped transform Boston into a world-class city during 16 often turbulent years as mayor, died at 7 tonight in his Beacon Hill home, according to a statement from his family. He was 82 and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease about a decade ago.

Mr. White was surrounded by his family, including his wife of 55 years, Kathryn.

A larger-than-life presence of his era, Mr. White had deep roots in the parochial old political culture of the city, but lightning instincts and a roving intellect that propelled him to national stature. Amid society-altering upheavals of the era -- the civil rights movement, Vietnam War, and Watergate -- he adapted and survived, at times reinventing himself.

From 1968 to 1984, Mr. White was chief executive of a fast-changing metropolis, which had emerged from decades of economic stagnation and insularity with an explosion of growth and construction downtown. But social change tore at the city's fabric. Racial tension and violence during court-ordered school desegregation in the mid-1970s stained Boston's image, perhaps indelibly.

I first met Kevin White at Black Expo in my home town of Indianapolis in 1972, ironically, I got a job on a Boston tv station the next year and he was kind enough to do my show, after that he became my friend and mentor. He was very kind with a coolness that matched his piercing blue eyes. I will always be grateful for his friendship. The best to his family,

I remember well the transformation of the City of Boston that was initiated by Mayor White. I was a child when it was only a vision and a young adult when the city was well on its way to being what it is today. I was hired to work in the first new hotel to open in Boston in a long time. They were exciting and exhilarating times. New construction projects broke ground daily. One day, I was on my way to work in the new hotel when I bumped into Mayor White, who was no longer holding office. He was looking at all of the new construction with a look of wonder and pride. I will always remember that look. He indeed had much to be proud of. Thank you Mayor White. May you rest in peace.

I will always remember him on stage at Boston Garden before the Rolling Stones concert in 1972. The show was two hours behind schedule due to Keith Richards being detained in Rhode Island and the crowd was not happy. He took the microphone, promised that all public transportation, trains etc. would keep running after the show. He told the audience the band was on the way with a police escort which he arranged. When he left the stage he received a standing ovation from everyone in the Garden! I will never forget it..he was a great Mayor!

I now live in NC, and check the Boston news now and again. I am so saddened to read this news! Mr. White did such great things in Boston and my favorite teenage memory is Summerthing. That was something that was geared for the teens, but was a family friendly function. In Eastie we all looked forward to Summerthing and all the other Parks and Recs things...Thank you Mr. White....and prayers go to your family.

I knew Kevin White when I worked at GAry's Drug Store on Charles and Mt Vernon (where he lived) as a teen inthe early 1960's. He came in frequently to cash a cheque (usually for a $100) on the weekend. And I used to deliver items from the store to his house up the street. He was always very polite and freindly--in fact unpretetntious even though he was then Secretary of state of MAssachusetts. James Dubro, Toronto

When I came from Puerto Rico in 1971 I was in front of the Upham Corner Little City Hall in Dorchester looking for some information about the city and the neighborhood and I saw this friendly man approached me and gave strong handshake and said to me, how are you doing? I smile and said I am doing fine sir, thank god! He asked me where is your accent from? I said Puerto Rico. He said good, we have a Puerto Rican community here in Boston and my name is " Kevin Blanco " is that how you say White in spanish? I reply yes sir. Welcome to our city, I am the Mayor he answer with his big and friendly smile. RIP Mr. Kevin Blanco (White). Hector M. Martinez, Boston.

To the White family -
I am a friend of Mark's from college who, as a native midwesterner from a Chicago suburb, didn't know much about Mayor Kevin White. However, after living in the Boston area since that time, and raising a family here, I have come to greatly value the legacy he left on a city I now love and call home. He was a remarkable man and leader.

With deepest sympathy for your profound loss,

Uncle Kevin was a born leader. His political ambitions started at a young age. Even as a boy, Kevin was "mayor of Ruskin Street". My father Brendan, Kevin's brother, used to love to tell us stories from when he and his brothers were kids growing up in West Roxbury. Here are two.

Whenever the neighborood kids played army, he was always the General while my father and other boys were mere privates who reported only to him. Their bunker was a clubhouse in my grandmother's basement.

One day, one of his Lieutenants decided that he wanted to be General. The conversation went something like this:

Lieutenant (saluting): "May I have a word with you General White?"

General White: "Yes Lieutenant, what's on your mind?"

Lieut. "Well General White, I've given it some thought and, well, I want to be General now.

(the other boys look at eachother)

General White: (Deep pause)... "Is that so? Well let me discuss this with other men. Why don't you go outside and we'll let you know what we decide."

(Several minutes past.)

General White: "Lieutenant, we've made a decision"

Lieut: "So I can be General?

Gen. White: "No, we've demoted you to private, now get to work."

Another Story:

One year, a new family moved in down the end of Ruskin street. When he got wind of this news, young Kevin marched down the street and knocked on their front door and said to the kid who answered the door: "what's this I hear about you moving into the neighborhood" (like they were suppose to clear it with him first) needless to say he was promptly kicked off the porch by the boys mother...

...and the rest is history. Rest in Peace Uncle Kevin.

I grew up in Beechland Street Projects during Busing. Kevin H. White gave our projects a citation of peace. During the busing period. He iniciated the YAC program. which changed my life in a positive way. I skipped School one day in the Public Garden and saw him walking around in deep thought. I was young and asked if he was ok, He didn't even ask why I wasn't in School .. he knew. He said. Just trying to figure things out kid. He knew,I knew what he meant. He cared for us..

My deepest sympathies to the family
of Mayor Kevin White.

I'm a person who moved from a small
city in western Massachusetts to the bright lights of Boston in the mid 1970s.

I worked at a low level in the White
Administration and I was also a cab driver for a few years.

Although I had to eventually depart Boston due to illness, I will always
treasure the years I spent there,
the friends I made there, the city I
came to know from behind the desk,
and from behind the wheel.

But first and foremost, he was a husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. my condolences to the family of the mayor. i was at that stones concert in the summer of 1972. stevie woder opened and there was such a long wait after he finished that the garden ran out of all beverages. mayor white took the stage before midnight saying that he had spoken to the governor of rhode island and that the stones would play. he had state police sent to meet them at the border and escort them to the garden. he also said that he had ordered the mbta to run until everyone at the concert had gone home. i think everyone at that concert would have elected him president that night. later when i worked in boston in the early 1980's near city hall i would often see the mayor walking the streets at lunch time saying hello to everyone he met. he was a good man and a great mayor. rest in peace mr mayor.

The passing of Kevin White is a very sad time for family, friends, former City workers and the City of Boston. But the recognition of his many accomplishments during his sixteen productive years in office is refreshing. His foresight and administrative ability produced the biggest building boom in the history of the City.
I will never forget the day Kevin asked me to bring my boat to Monument Beach so he could demonstrate his water skiing ability to adoring fans on the beach.Everything was fine until the police boat behind Kevin signaled me to stop which I did.Kevin, unaware of the police boat yelled as he sank what the hell are you doing.
One of many memories
As a result of our association with Kevin all of us have enjoyed a better way of life.
Our prayers are with Kathryn,Family and Friends.

He was a wonderful man who of course first loved his family - but he also loved his city and served it so well. I will never forget his kindness to my dad and our famile while serving on the BPD dad was shot.

It was an honest compassion and he and his staff did everything to make sure our family was okay. Thank G-d it was not a fatal shot, but his outpouring of compassion, energy and respect for my dad's position on the BPD will never be forgotten and while I do not wish any other child to go through that - I hope that G-d forbid should it happen the sitting mayor is able to do the same (as is Tom Menino today).

It means so much to the family and stays with us always.

Dear Kathryn & Family,
On behalf of my family, I want to express our deepest sympathy and condolences and offer our prayers.
Like many young residents of the City, Mayor White opened the doors of City Hall to us in 1968, allowing us to join his administration and use our energy, our enthusium and our desires to bring substanial and positive change to our neighborhoods and the city. From precinet captain of Ward 22-1 to Ward Coordinator of Allston and Brighton, working for Mayor White was like being in the major leagues. The Mayor transformed the city and propelled us to successful careers in government and other avenues. He lead the city through good times and trying times and never waivered in his responsibilites.
Kevin White was a "loner in love with the city", and he was "Mayor of America" and "Kevin from heaven", where he returns to organize the next campaign. So, for one last time, "Up, Up, the Mayor".
Thank you for the opportunity you gave me to serve in your Administration and the City of Boston. God Bless and God Bless your family.

Mr. Mayor, Kathryn and family, In January 1975, as a 23 year old rookie campaigner, I was given the opportunity to learn the skills and tools of politics and to witness and participate in events that have shaped the Boston that my family and I enjoy today. I am a proud member of the KHW+ team. That experience directed me down a path of public service and advocacy, that was passed down to my own children, all of whom are engaged in our City and one of whom now serves in elected office. The impact of your leadership and of those whom you entrusted responsibility to at that important time in history is immortalized in the reputation Boston enjoys around the world. Some continue to serve the City and the country today. I was mentored and inspired by young men and women like the late Kirk O'Donnell, Elaine Guiney, Bo and Robert Holland, Kevin Fitzgerald, Alan Austin and others whom I met because of you. May you all rest in peace together.

Kevin White brought a new zest to Boston's city government. He had a vision for the city that was unmatched from Little City Halls, and Summerthing to better delivery of essential services. He made City Hall come alive with style and class. As George Frazier said he had duende. It was challenging and fun to work in Kevin White's administration as a young man. Our sympathies to the Kathryn and the White family.

Many of us came of age in Kevin White's Boston - he loved this City and inspired us to love her too - for that we (and she) are eternally grateful.

Mayor White,

May your journey on the other side be peaceful. You were a steady and dynamic leader in the city during very turbulent times. Thank you for your contributions and hard work to make Boston a great city!

Just the best Mayor, he built Boston! We were Beacon Hill neighbors and I'd often meet him at the local store where you could select movies/tapes - he'd wander around, ask my opinion and never let on that he was "Mayor", so gracious, kind and a man for all the people. Deepest sympathies,

When I moved to Boston in 1966 it was a new experience for me. By 68 the world and the city had changed. My Mayor guided us to the new Boston. One that I now always call my home town.Thank you Mr. Mayor. We were so lucky to have you.
