Foth-Dorfmeyer Mortuary - Toledo Obituary

Bernard E. Quigley, 98, fell asleep with the Lord on Tuesday July 3rd, 2012 in Toledo, OH, while surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving and caring niece Sandra Manton and her husband, Tom, Bernard's great-nephews Michael, Christopher, Timothy and John.

Uncle Bernie, or Unk, as he was known to friends and family, was born May 20,1914 and raised in Worcester, MA. He lived in Toledo since he was a young man. After serving in the Air Force, Uncle Bernie acquired a job at the Commodore Perry Hotel, which lead to him meeting his future wife, Lucille. Uncle Bernie later achieved a role in the human resources department for the Toledo Scale where he became well known, while working there for 25 years. After retirement at the Toledo Scale, he traveled the world extensively with his wife, Lucille, who passed away in 1986. They traveled together throughout Europe and the United States. They cherished each other's company and made many lifelong friends along the way.

Although Uncle Bernie never had children of his own, he was a father to many. In addition to a devout husband, he was an exceptional role model who will never be forgotten. He was an Uncle, Great Uncle, and an exceptional Father and Grandfather figure. Growing up, he always made time to pick his nephews up from school every day. He enjoyed taking them out for ice cream, watching the airplanes fly in and out at the Toledo Airport, or always finding a way to surprise them, a truly kind, caring, gentle and loving family man. Uncle Bernie was truly the measuring stick for gentlemen, always setting an example for his family. Be it holding a door for a stranger, saying "please" and "thank you," or letting his nephews win a hand of rummy, he carried himself with true class and the utmost respect. He raised his nieces and nephews as his own children. In addition to traveling, he very much enjoyed playing cards, watching classic movies, a good cup of coffee, and was a pleasure and true joy to have a wonderful conversation with. In 98 years of life, almost an entire century, he has seen it all. Uncle Bernie had a brilliant mind and an amazingly cheerful and optimistic attitude. He always had wonderful stories to tell from his vast experiences, and always had insightful and understanding advice to give.

Uncle Bernie was a devout Catholic, attending mass each week and in later years, watching mass on Sunday mornings on television. After the passing of his wife, he would visit her grave in Calvary Cemetery in the morning and afternoon, every day. He was past Exalted Ruler of the Toledo Elks Lodge No. 53 and a lifetime member.
Friends may call at the Foth – Dorfmeyer Mortuary 3815 Sylvania Ave. (Between Monroe St. & Talmadge Rd.) Thursday from 2- 8 PM. where funeral prayers will be held at 9:30 AM Friday followed by Funeral Mass at 10 AM at Gesu Catholic Church. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
Toledo Elks Lodge #53 will conduct a Lodge service Thursday at 7 PM in the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial tributes be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

In all, Uncle Bernie was loved by all who he encountered, and shall be greatly missed by all of us who he touched the lives of so dearly. Our deepest thanks to his caregivers, Esther, Karen and Susie. Rest well, we love you so very much Uncle Bernie.

Not sure what to say?

I met Bernie through my girlfriend (and his niece), Sandy. When he heard I was having trouble finding a job (due to young age graduating HS and lack of experience), he said "I'm HR at Toledo Scale. If you test well, we might have a position for you." It was my first fulltime job; a job I loved and where I met great people, many of which are still my good friends. The world has lost a gentle man. My condolences to you, Sandy.

A very sweet gentle man has passed on to our lord.We will miss seeing him at the West Toledo Barber Shop! Our deepest thoughts are with you in this time of great sorrow. From Kris and Leslie

Bernie was a gentleman who life's was guided by the cardinal principals of our order Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity. It was my great privilege to be his Brother. My condolences and best wishes go out to all the family.

I was saddened to read about "Unk's" passing. I know how much you all loved him and how much he loved you all. A grand person who will be missed by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. My condolences to the Manton family.
